India U19 captain Niki recalls advice by Shafali Varma ahead of 2025 T20 WC

India's U19 captain Niki Prasad expressed happiness at getting a chance to lead the team during the ICC Women's U19 T20 World Cup and also recalled advice from senior Indian batter Shafali Varma, who led Women in Blue to the title in inaugural edition in 2023. The tournament will be starting from Saturday onwards in Malaysia and will go on till February 2 this year. India secured the inaugural title back in 2023 under the captaincy of Shafali Varma, beating England in the final. In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Niki expressed that she feels thankful for the opportunity to lead the team as many players dream of playing and captaining India. She also recalled that Shafali advice the team to "go out and enjoy" as they start their campaign against West Indies from Sunday at Bayuemas Oval, Pandamaran. Speaking in the video, Niki said, "Representing the country is a matter of highest pride for us as a cricketer. And now since we have gotten this opportunity, I think we are going to go out there and give our best and defend the title. It is very special for me, because a lot of players out there are dreaming to play for India. And I have not just got the opportunity to play for the country but also to lead the Indian side." "All of us are really excited to be playing the ICC World Cup. And we are all very motivated and very excited to go out there and show what we can do. I got to speak with the captain who won last time. I got to speak to Shefali Varma and one piece of advice she gave me was to just go out there and have fun and enjoy. We are definitely looking forward to carrying the tradition of winning and we want to create this legacy of winning ICC trophies," she added. 16 teams will compete in 41 matches across three host cities in Malaysia - Johor, Sarawak, and Selangor. These teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. India is in Group A with hosts Malaysia, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The knockout stage will start from the first semifinal on January 31 and the final will take place on February 2 at Bayuemas Oval, Pandamaran. The four best teams out of the Super Six will make it to the semifinals. Squad: Niki Prasad (Captain), Sanika Chalke (Vice-captain), G Trisha, Kamalini G (WK), Bhavika Ahire (WK), Ishwari Awasare, Mithila Vinod, Joshitha VJ, Sonam Yadav, Parunika Sisodiya, Kesari Drithi, Aayushi Shukla, Anandita Kishor, MD Shabnam, Vaishnavi S Standby players: Nandhana S, Ira J, Anadi T.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh asks who altered BCCI rules, says same policies existed earlier

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh on Friday asserted that the BCCI's 10-point policy for its centrally-contracted players has actually been in place since his playing days and wanted to know when was it "altered" and by whom. Terming the guidelines "fresh documentation", Harbhajan said the move diverts attention from the team's forgettable on-field performance against New Zealand and Australia recently. Days after the 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI has come up with a 10-point diktat to promote "discipline and unity", making domestic cricket mandatory, imposing restriction on the presence of families and personal staff on tours and banning individual commercial endorsements during series. To Harbhajan, all these measures seemed like old wine in a new bottle. "Let me first put this on record. When I was reading the travel policy document reported by the media, I hardly found anything new from the last time I represented India as a centrally-contracted cricketer," Harbhajan told PTI during an interaction. "At least nine out of 10 points, including duration of family visits, staying in same hotel, practice timings, all are same. My question is if these rules were in place during my time, who all have altered it and when? That should be probed," Harbhajan, who has 700 plus international wickets across formats, said. The same assertion was also made by one of Harbhajan's former India teammate Irfan Pathan. For Harbhajan, what is certainly not funny is the timing of issuing these guidelines as he feels the discussion should have been strictly on cricket only. "Hum log mudde se bhatak rahein hain (We are deviating from the main issue). We didn't lose 1-3 because wives and partners were there for two months. We didn't lose because someone travelled separately. "We lost because we have played very poor cricket at times. We didn't bat well even at home. We have players who are horribly out of form. What are the course corrections being made? Or is it just these off-the-field things being discussed?" he questioned. One of India's finest spinners, Harbhajan then recollected his playing days. "I think some of the points needed to be revisited because they were being flouted. Like in our times, I never saw a Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid or Anil Kumble leave for Mumbai, Kolkata or Bengaluru just because the match has ended in three days and next game is a week away. "They all stayed and travelled to next destination. Only change I see (in the new rulebook) is 150 kg suitcase allowance. Back in the day, we used to have lesser. "Why would you need to tell players that you have to travel by team bus? That's a given. If someone was breaking the rule, that person needs to be probed." While he completely supported barring the personal entourage of any particular player or a coach, Harbhajan felt that the BCCI can have a couple of quality chefs travelling with the team. "BCCI has deep pockets. Why do you need to carry personal chefs. In soccer World Cup, big teams carry their own chef, who takes care of dietary requirements of players. Have a couple of team chefs. It is not a big deal," he added. Gambhir's role is on field not administrative According to Harbhajan, the only thing new in the policy document is players requiring prior approval of head coach Gautam Gambhir on certain matters, and the former spinner didn't agree with that. "In our times, it used to be written that prior approval of BCCI was needed on certain matters. So, for approvals, drop a mail to BCCI and ask for permission. Why does the head coach need to get into all this? That is not his job. "His job is on the field and in the technical aspects where we are lacking.  Administrative part should be left with competent people in the BCCI," he said. Tendulkar hails Karun Nair as batter nears all-time Vijay Hazare Trophy record

Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar lauded compatriot Karun Nair for his monumental run as a part of Vidarbha's Vijay Hazare Trophy side, saying that performances like this just do not happen out of nowhere, they come from "immense focus and hard work". Nair, who is captaining Vidarbha in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, will play the title clash against his former team Karnataka at Vadodara on Saturday. Nair is the top-run-getter in the team so far, having accumulated a massive 752 runs in seven matches at a mind-boggling average of 752.00 due to him being unbeaten in six innings. He has also scored five centuries and a fifty in the competition, with the best score of 163*. His strike rate is 125.96. Taking to X, Sachin wrote, "Scoring 752 runs in 7 innings with 5 centuries is nothing short of extraordinary, @karun126. Performances like these don't just happen, they come from immense focus and hard work. Keep going strong and make every opportunity count!" Scoring 752 runs in 7 innings with 5 centuries is nothing short of extraordinary, @karun126. Performances like these don’t just happen, they come from immense focus and hard work. Keep going strong and make every opportunity count! — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) January 17, 2025 In the semifinal against Maharashtra on Thursday, Nair made a quickfire 88* in 44 balls, with nine fours and five sixes to guide Vidarbha to a match-winning total of 380 runs. Maharashtra could only make 311/7. Nair is on the verge of breaking an all-time record in the tournament. If he scores 79 more runs in the tournament, he will overtake Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan's tally of 830 runs (in eight matches, at an average of 138.33, with a strike rate of over 125 and five centuries, a best score of 277) during the 2022/23 edition of the competition. This strong performance in the tournament has earned Nair acclaim from the cricketing fraternity and fans alike, with many demanding he gets another call to the Indian team. Having last played for India in March 2017, Nair was the only Test triple centurion for India after legendary opener Virender Sehwag. In six Tests for India since his debut in 2016, he made 374 runs in seven innings at an average of 62.33, with best score of 303*. Nair also played two ODIs for India, scoring 46 runs with best score of 39.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Manjrekar wants Kohli to play county cricket to regain form before England Test

Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar on Friday urged the struggling Virat Kohli to play in the English County Championship to regain form before the marquee Test series in England. India and England will lock horns in four Tests in June-July, and Kohli will be desperate for a turnaround in his fortunes after dismal outings against New Zealand and Australia recently. Speaking on Star Sports' Deep Point podcast, Manjrekar stressed on Kohli gaining some much-needed practice in red-ball cricket in English conditions before the Tests come calling. "Kohli needs to play a lot of red-ball cricket. The first Test in England is in June, while the County Championship begins in April. He could join a county team, like Pujara did, and gain valuable match practice," Manjrekar said. "India can then evaluate his performances in the initial Test matches. If there are positive signs, he can continue. But the last thing you want is Kohli going there and struggling, as we've seen before. That wouldn't be good for Indian cricket. Playing County cricket could be a very sensible move for him," he added. Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar voiced his support for Kohli, expressing confidence in the batter's ability to make a strong comeback thanks to his fitness. "I'm still backing him. Even at 36 (years old), he's as fit as ever. His fitness levels are remarkable, and I believe he can continue playing at the highest level," Bangar said. Selectors to decide on Bumrah's fitness, Jaiswal's inclusion for CT squad

The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will convene here on Saturday to pick India's squad for the Champions Trophy, and they will have to deal with two tricky scenarios the fitness of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and how to fit in Yashasvi Jaiswal in the provisional 15. Bumrah had suffered back spasms during the recent Sydney Test against Australia and did not bowl on the final day at SCG. He has been advised "off-loading" and his fitness is being monitored closely by the physios at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. So, Agarkar and his colleagues along with head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Rohit Sharma will ponder deeply over Bumrah's fitness status before taking a final call on his inclusion. A clarity over the vexed scenario will be given once Agarkar and Rohit address a press conference post the selection committee meeting. That Rohit attending the press do is also the clearest indication of him retaining the captaincy in the ODIs, despite swirling speculations about his future in Test cricket after a dismal tour to Australia. In an Instagram video, the 37-year-old was seen playing his signature shots, including flicks, drives, lofted hits, and pulls against the white ball during a training session here. Then there has also been a clamour from all corners to include Jaiswal in the squad. The 23-year-old is in fine form right now, and he will also offer the left-hand variety at the top, reasons listed in favour of his selection. But Jaiswal's selection could put him in direct competition with KL Rahul as Rohit, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are certainties as India's top four. So, if you need Jaiswal too in the squad then it's a tough proposition for the selectors. It could also be that Jaiswal will be given a chance against England in the three-match ODI series, and prefer Rahul for the ICC event. The squad for the rubber against England too will be picked on Saturday. The primary wicketkeeper batter slot could be allotted to Rishabh Pant as Sanju Samson skipping the Vijay Hazare Trophy has not gone down well with the powers that be. Dhruv Jurel could come into picture in that scenario as second stumper. Senior pacer Mohammed Shami will be in the squad given that he has has played most of the domestic matches, and has also been drafted into India's squad for the five-match home T20I series against England. The other name that could come up for discussion is that of on-song Karun Nair, who has so far hammered 752 runs in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy at an average of 752 with five hundreds. But it is tough to find a place for him in the already densely populated middle-order that will also have all-rounder Hardik Pandya. However, Karun could get a call for the one-dayers against England. The selectors will also seek clarity on star wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav's fitness, as he has been recuperating from a long-standing groin injury. Kuldeep had shared videos of him bowling in his social media accounts, and that might be counted as a good sign ahead of the selection meeting. Pacer Prasidh Krishna too could be on the flight to Dubai, where India will open the campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. India cricketers to curb family time on tour after Australia defeat

India's cricket board has capped the amount of time players can spend with their families on tour after a string of Test defeats including a 3-1 drubbing in Australia this month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued new policies Thursday for the senior men's team detailing guidelines to "promote discipline, unity and a positive team environment". As part of the new guidelines, families will be allowed to stay with the players for a maximum of two weeks during overseas tours of 45 days or more. The guidelines, seen by AFP on Friday, also makes participation in domestic cricket "mandatory to be eligible for selection in the national team". Non-compliance could result in disciplinary action including fines and a ban on participating in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), Indian broadcaster NDTV reported. The new rules come on the heels of sharp criticism of the board, which critics have accused of allowing a 'star culture' to thrive. "The cricket board needs to stop acting like admirers and put their foot down," retired Indian batting great Sunil Gavaskar told news channel India Today earlier this month after the Australia tour. Top players, including captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli, have not played in the domestic circuit in years. Both have come under fire for failing to deliver wins in recent bilateral series. Rohit, who missed the only India win in Australia because of the birth of his second child, managed 31 runs in three matches. Kohli scored one century but managed only 90 runs across his eight other innings. The new BCCI rules prohibit players from travelling separately to and from matches and practice sessions. "Separate travel arrangements are discouraged to maintain discipline and team cohesion," the board said, adding that all team members were "required to stay for the entire duration of the scheduled practices". "This rule ensures commitment and fosters a strong work ethic within the team," said the board. India's next Test tour is slated for June in England, where they will play five matches. Pakistan-heritage Saqib Mahmood gets visa for India tour after prolonged delay

England fast-bowler Saqib Mahmood has finally received his visa for the team's upcoming white-ball tour of India, starting with the T20I series opener in Kolkata on January 22. Mahmood, who is of Pakistani heritage, had faced a delay in procuring the travel document, forcing him to miss an England training camp in the UAE. The 27-year-old Lancashire seamer will join the touring English party in the UAE, where the team held a pace-bowling camp for the likes of Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Mark Wood alongside fast-bowling mentor James Anderson, on their way to India. Two other members of the T20I squad of similar background -- Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed -- had however received their visas earlier. Mahmood had encountered similar issues in the past and, in 2019, he had to be replaced in an England Lions squad for the India tour due to a delay in obtaining his visa. A similar reason had prevented Mahmood from travelling to India for a Lancashire pre-season camp last year. Also last year, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was forced to fly back to London on the eve of England's five-match Test series against India as he had to obtain his visa, which kept him out of the first game in Hyderabad. Having overcome consecutive lower-back stress fractures, Mahmood returned to the international fold last year, and was named player of the series during England's T20I assignment in the Caribbean in November, taking nine wickets at 10.55. He has played nine one-day internationals and 18 T20Is for England since making his deut in February 2020, and picked 38 wickets across formats. England will play five T20Is and three ODIs in India.  (With agency inputs)

Virat Kohli (Pic: AFP)

Virat Kohli added to Delhi's Ranji Trophy squad for Saurashtra tie

Star batter Virat Kohli has been named in Delhi's 22-member provisional squad for their next Ranji Trophy game against Saurashtra in Rajkot but doubts remain about his participation after it came to light that he is nursing a niggle. It is learnt that Kohli has intimated the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) top brass that he has a neck niggle that he sustained in Sydney during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia. He was treated by the physio there and as of now, there is no clarity on availability for the Ranji match starting January 23. Whether he will play or just fly down to Rajkot for a couple of days' training will be clear only after he details his position to DDCA president Rohan Jaitley. Kohli had last played a red-ball game for Delhi back in 2012 against Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad. A year after that, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar played his last Ranji Trophy match against Haryana at Lahli. Talismanic wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will feature in a Ranji Trophy game after nearly seven years although it has been learnt that he has declined captaincy, which means Ayush Badoni will continue in the role. "Rishabh felt the existing captain (Badoni) should continue to lead the side. He feels that since he is not available consistently, one shouldn't tinker with leadership," a member of the DDCA apex council told PTI on conditions of anonymity. "When he was offered captaincy, he said that he is very happy to play under Badoni. We have picked 22 players including five U-23, who would fly to Bhilai for their CK Nayudu U-23 match against Chattisgarh, starting January 25," he added. The BCCI has made it mandatory for all centrally-contracted cricketers to play domestic cricket unless there is some compelling reason to skip the assignment. The Board has warned that non-compliance would invite sanctions, including deductions from central contract retainer and ban on playing in the Indian Premier League. Among the big names already confirmed for upcoming Ranji game is Yashasvi Jaiswal, who will turn up for Mumbai, and Shubman Gill who will represent Punjab in the next round. (With agency inputs)

Rohit Sharma sharpens white-ball skills ahead of Champions Trophy: WATCH

India captain Rohit Sharma has been honing his white-ball skills in preparation for the upcoming ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy. In a video on Instagram, the 37-year-old was seen playing his signature shots, including flicks, drives, lofted hits, and pulls against the white ball during a training session.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Rohit Sharma (@rohitsharma45) Mumbai face Jammu and Kashmir on January 23, but Rohit's participation in the match remains in doubt. India's Champions Trophy campaign begins on February 20 against Bangladesh in Dubai, following the ODI series against England starting February 6. Rohit's recent performances in red-ball cricket have raised concerns. During the Australia tour, he managed only 31 runs in five innings across three Tests. The 2024-25 Test season, in particular, was dismal for Rohit, as he could muster only 164 runs in eight matches and 15 innings at an average of 10.93, with his highest score being 52--a solitary half-century against Bangladesh. As captain, Rohit experienced some embarrassing lows recently. Just before the Test series against Australia, India suffered their first home Test series loss in 12 years, going down 0-3 to New Zealand. This was also India's first-ever whitewash in a home Test series of three matches or more. After India won the first Test against Australia at Perth by 295 runs under the captaincy of Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit returned to the side following the birth of his second child. However, his return saw mixed results. India lost the pink-ball Test at Adelaide, managed a draw in the third Test at Brisbane, but succumbed to defeats in the Boxing Day and New Year's Tests at Melbourne and Sydney, respectively. In the 2024 calendar year, Rohit lost six Tests, including four at home. This led to a decline in his record as a Test captain, with 12 wins, nine losses, and three draws. However, there remains little doubt about Rohit's white-ball credentials. He finished the 2024 calendar year as a T20 World Cup-winning captain, amassing 378 runs in 11 matches at an average of 42.00 and a strike rate of 160.16. His performances included a century and three half-centuries, with a top score of 121. In the T20 World Cup, Rohit was the second-highest run-getter and India's top scorer, accumulating 257 runs in eight matches at an average of 36.71 and a strike rate of 156.70, with three half-centuries. Rohit played just three ODIs last year, all against Sri Lanka, scoring 157 runs at an average of 52.33 and an impressive strike rate of 141.44, including two half-centuries and a top score of 64. Since 2023, Rohit has significantly improved his ODI game, blending consistency with explosive intent in the powerplay. In 30 ODIs since then, he has scored 1,412 runs at an average of 52.29 and a strike rate of 119.35, with two centuries and 11 fifties. His best score was 131. His incredible ICC Cricket World Cup campaign last year at home further highlighted his form. Rohit ended as the tournament's second-highest run-getter, with 597 runs in 11 matches at an average of 54.27 and a strike rate of 125.94. His performances included a century and three half-centuries, with the best score of 131.

Yuvraj Singh backs Rohit Sharma despite two consecutive Test series loses

Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh backed Team India skipper Rohit Sharma despite losing back-to-back Test series against New Zealand and Australia. As a captain, Rohit Sharma has seen hard times, recently. Just before the Australia series, India lost the home Test series against New Zealand which was for the first time in 12 years. "Gautam Gambhir needs to be given more time as he has just come into the system. Rohit won us the T20 World Cup and he was the captain when India reached the World Cup (ODI) final. Mumbai Indians won 5 IPLs under Rohit's captaincy. He stepped down in the last Test (of BGT) to give someone else the chance, how many captains have done that in the past? I look at what he has done in the last 3-5 years, one tournament can't decide. For me, the series defeat at home was more disappointing as India losing 3-0 against New Zealand was tougher," Yuvraj Singh said during an event. Also Read: Gautam Gambhir spoke about 'indiscipline' in dressing room during BCCI meeting: Sources Rohit Sharma's captaincy has been a bag full of mixed results. Under him, Team India won 10 consecutive matches in the ODI World Cup 2023 and fell short against Australia in the finals. Later, the team won the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Under him, the team also made it to the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023, where they lost to Australia. However, since the second half of 2024, luck seems to have deserted the 'Hitman' both as a batter and captain. In the 2024/25 Test season which started with the home series against Bangladesh, Rohit scored just 164 runs in eight matches and 15 innings at an average of 10.93 with the best score of 52. In the concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma was only able to garner just 31 runs in three Test matches against Australia. Later, in the final Test match, he himself opted out. In the 2024 calendar year, Rohit lost six Tests, including four matches at home. This led to a decline in Rohit's Test record as captain, winning 12 and losing nine, while three ended in a draw. Gautam Gambhir spoke about 'indiscipline' in dressing room during BCCI meeting

Following the series losses, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir opened up about the indiscipline in the Indian dressing room during the review meeting, said a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Gautam Gambhir said that indiscipline is the reason why BCCI is going back to pre-Covid rules. The head coach and players were on the same page on the topic of family stay. There were more points which were discussed in the meeting. Gautam Gambhir said that only one team dinner happened during the entire Australia tour. There were also talks on the match fees in the meeting. One senior player who was in the meeting suggested the idea to the Indian Cricket Board of not distributing the match fee because players are not giving priority to domestic and national teams. Also Read: D Gukesh receives Major Dhyna Chand Khel Ratna award from President Droupadi Murmu, WATCH According to a source from the BCCI, Team India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar's roles are under scanner as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aren't happy with the apparent 'Kolkata Knight Riders touch' in the team management. Former Indian all-rounder Abhishek Nayar and former Netherlands star Ryan Ten Doeschate joined Team India's support staff as assistant coaches during the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. Nayar and Doeschate were also the assistant coaches at KKR and worked with Gambhir. BCCI sources also said that former Saurashtra cricketer Sitanshu Kotak will likely join Team India as an assistant batting coach. Sitanshu Kotak played 130 first-class matches and 211 innings, where he scored 8061 runs at an average of 41.76, laced with 15 centuries and 55 half-centuries in first-class cricket. He also appeared in 89 List A matches, where he scored 3083 runs in 86 innings at an average of 42.23. This development comes ahead of the upcoming home series against England, where India will play 5 T20Is followed by 3 ODIs. It is also understood that on the sidelines of the first T20 vs England in Kolkata, a meeting may happen between Gautam Gambhir and BCCI. Top seamer Mohammed Shami made a return to the India squad as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against England. The five-match T20I series will kick off on January 22 in Kolkata. The second and third matches will be held on January 25 and 28 in Chennai and Rajkot, respectively. The fourth game of the series will be played on January 31 in Pune. Mumbai will host the final match of the T20I series on February 2. India's squad for the T20I series: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (WK), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (VC), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel (WK). Speaking about the BGT 2024-25 series, team India conceded a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Australia in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and lost the opportunity to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord's.
