Yo Yo Honey Singh, whose birth name is Hirdesh Singh, gained instant stardom by belting out hits such as Main Sharabi, Angrezi beat and Lungi dance.

Honey Singh took to Instagram on Sunday and wrote a long birthday post, which read: "A year older but a whole lot wiser! This and every other birthday is always special, not just for me but to everyone around me. I remember having grand birthday celebrations ever since birthdays started making sense to me. Fun, fervour and bohot saari good wishes and blessings. For every big and small thing, my parents taught me to be grateful and humble. It still continues. Inshallah! To many more birthdays, a loving family, my fans and well-wishers around me Thank You with all my heart" [sic]

Honey Singh's last hit Loca, which released in February this year, is one of the most played party tracks on YouTube this month. The singer, who is often accused of promoting alcoholism through outrageous lyrics, says alcohol is an important aspect of partying and celebrating, and adds that the day the government stops giving license to open wine and liquor shops, he will end reference to alcohol in his songs.

Like many of his past hits, Loca, too, starts with a mention of alcohol. There were reports that the singer, at the peak of his career a few years back, had to enter rehab owing to alcoholism.

"I never went to rehab. I know that there are a lot of reports that are circulating around me and my life. I don't drink now," countered Honey Singh, adding: "Whenever you party then alcohol is the biggest reason to do so. You can't avoid that. In fact, our governments give license to open wine shops and liquor shops. The day they stop doing that, we will also put an end to mention of alcohol in our songs."

Honey Singh, who has 3.8 million fan followers on Instagram and 5.3 million followers on Twitter, has belted out numerous hits, and has been tagged a pioneer of Punjabi pop since the late 2000s.

To take his game to the next level, Yo Yo Honey Singh has also tried venturing into the world of acting. He made his acting debut with the 2012 Punjabi film Mirza: The Untold Story, and two years later made his Bollywood debut with The Xpose alongside Himesh Reshammiya.

Honey Singh went on to act in films such as Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 and Zorawar (which was said to be one of the most expensive Punjabi films to date). However, none of the films helped Honey Singh to recreate the frenzy he so effortlessly triggers off among fans as a singer.

While his acting career never took off, Honey Singh's streak with hit music, of course, continued. Not only is he regularly spinning chartbusting non-film hits, but his rap numbers have also contributed to the success of film soundtracks such as Cocktail, Chennai Express, Khiladi 786, Boss and Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety.

In fact, Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety has won Honey Singh the Best Music Director's trophy at many popular awards ceremonies including International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA).
