Pricing Strategy for Hemp Based Carbon Credits: Satyam Chauhan's Approach

The aviation industry, with its significant carbon footprint of 800 million metric tons of CO₂ in 2023 (constituting 2% of global energy-related emissions) is facing mounting pressure to transition toward sustainability. At Tao Climate, hemp, sustainable housing etc. is used for carbon removal. The role of Satyam Chauhan is worth mentioning.

Chauhan’s contributions at Tao Climate, a carbon removal service company, have been pivotal in addressing this challenge through innovative strategies in customer experience (CX), operations, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) products. These efforts involved developing detailed evaluation plans to establish CO₂-informed, customer-centric pricing models that meet regulatory compliance while ensuring local market fit and global scalability.

Collaborating directly with airlines, airports, and stakeholders, he helped tailor Tao Climate’s solutions, such as carbon-removal credits, operational-carbon management services, and hemp-based SAF feedstock, to address the industry’s needs. He also helped in progressive pricing models for nature-based carbon credits and SAF, aligning with Tao’s goal of decarbonizing the aviation sector. “By designing frameworks for pricing and integrating real-time emissions monitoring, I ensured that Tao’s business model and product positioning effectively tackled CO₂ emissions while meeting market demand”, he remarks.

One of his significant initiatives involved advocating for hemp-based SAF to meet EU mandates on sustainable aviation blends. He also developed pricing strategies for Tao Operations that accounted for compliance costs, helping airlines and airports achieve CO₂ reduction targets. These actions underscored his commitment towards balancing sustainability and business development while addressing aviation’s emissions challenges.

At Tao Climate, he implemented a nature-based pricing strategy that linked carbon credit prices directly to emission-reduction goals. This strategy fostered partnerships with airlines by integrating carbon-credit inventory into reservation platforms, boosting ancillary sales and strengthening collaboration. “My efforts also advanced corporate sustainability by ensuring compliance with international frameworks like ReFuel EU”, he mentions. A key achievement was designing a pricing model projected to unlock an additional €5.7 billion in incremental global revenues while creating environmental benefits.

Aviation’s financial risks under global carbon pricing regimes, such as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), highlight the urgency for innovative solutions. For instance, United Airlines' 2022 emissions of 43.89 million metric tons CO₂e translate to potential liabilities of $2.19 billion at a conservative carbon price of $50 per metric ton. These liabilities are expected to grow as carbon prices rise above €100 per metric ton by 2023 and as the ICAO CORSIA framework enforces stricter offset requirements.

Efficiency indicators, such as United Airlines’ 773 metric tons CO₂e per 1,000 revenue ton-kilometers in 2022, further underscore the need for de-carbonization strategies. Chauhan’s contributions in pricing frameworks and carbon reduction technologies position Tao Climate to support the aviation industry in mitigating these financial and regulatory pressures. By aligning carbon offset programs with real-time emissions data and pricing mechanisms, he enabled airlines to achieve compliance and reduce financial exposure.

He has authored two impactful research papers that advanced sustainability in carbon sequestration and pricing. The first paper, "Leveraging AI and IoT for Optimized Hemp-Based Carbon Sequestration," explores how technologies like artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things can transform carbon sequestration processes using hemp, offering scalable and data-driven solutions for climate change mitigation. The second, "Pricing Framework for Hemp-Based Carbon Credits," presents a scalable methodology for pricing carbon credits derived from hemp, balancing market dynamics and sustainability goals. These papers reflect a dedication to integrating technology and business strategies for impactful climate solutions.

Given the rapid evolution of sustainability regulations in aviation, he designed a dynamic pricing model responsive to regulatory changes and emissions data. This model ensured that Tao’s offerings remained competitive and compliant, adapting to shifting compliance metrics and emission standards. Additionally, he addressed information gaps in hemp-based carbon credits by collaborating with agronomists and using satellite data to establish scientifically credible parameters for hemp’s carbon sequestration potential.

The aviation industry’s sustainability efforts are increasingly focused on dynamic carbon credit pricing, driven by flight-specific data, and the growing adoption of SAF, encouraged by regulatory mandates and consumer preferences. Passenger education about carbon offsets is becoming crucial for fostering engagement in sustainability initiatives. Partnerships with growers and airports will be critical to scaling SAF and carbon credit initiatives. Furthermore, real-time reporting tools and transparent pricing mechanisms will play a vital role in building trust and encouraging adoption.

Through scalable and transparent solutions, Satyam Chauhan is at the forefront of supporting the aviation sector’s transition to sustainability. By aligning pricing strategies with emissions goals and leveraging innovative technologies, these initiatives ensure that sustainability and business growth are achieved in tandem.
