Treppe

A chartered accountant-turned-photographer Aashish Vyas seems to have much to show about when it comes to staircases in the city. Currently underway is his first solo show, titled Treppe (which means steps in German), at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Vyas has been taking pictures of steps across the city — from the CST building to the forts in Bandra and Sewri, industrial spaces and private residences.

“Steps are beautiful and will always be around irrespective of what time we live in. There were around thousands of years ago, and will exist even after thousands of years from now. You can’t escape them no matter how technologically advanced we become,” Vyas comments.

Vyas roamed around the city, visiting old buildings and private residences taking pictures of steps. “It took me around four months to complete the work, but I think the process started the moment I took up photography,” he says.

When asked about the inspiration behind the show, Vyas replies, “The idea was always there. If you sit back and think you would realise steps signify so much in our lives. When we take a step, we don’t realise it instantly but it helps us climb up somewhere in our lives. I took my first steps as a child, and slowly I climbed higher as a person, and in my career. I find them very thought-provoking.”
