Union Budget: Nirmala Sitharaman opts for a saree featuring Madhubani art

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is all set to create history by presenting her eighth consecutive budget today i.e., on February 1. Her budget day sarees have often become a point of conversation over the years, representing different Indian textiles and crafts. This year, Sitharaman has opted for a cream handloom saree with gold borders, pairing it with a contrasting red blouse. The saree features a beautiful Madhubani motif. The Finance Minister is wearing the saree as a tribute to Madhubani art and the skill of renowned Madhubani artist and Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi, who had gifted it to her during the former's visit to Mithila Art Institute.  #UnionBudget2025 | Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is wearing a saree as a tribute to Madhubani Art and the skill of Padma awardee Dulari Devi. This traditional art form usually depicts people, nature, mythology and scenes from everyday life. Continuing her tradition of highlighting Indian crafts through her outfits on Budget days, Sitharaman has once again made a powerful style statement. Nirmala Sitharaman’s sarees Sitharaman is known to don traditional sarees during public appearances, especially while presenting the Union Budget. Not only do these sarees feature Indian textiles and crafts, but can also entail subtle signs of what the budget has in store. She usually opts for warm or muted colours with simple draping and styling. For example, during the 2024 Budget announcement, she opted for an off-white silk saree, adorned with a purple border. Her sarees usually represent Indian handlooms from different corners of the country, sending the message of supporting local weavers and artisans.  Paperless Budget tradition The Finance Minister was seen posing for photographs before meeting the President ahead of Union Budget 2025. She is carrying forward her tradition of using a digital tablet enclosed in a red 'bahi-khata' style pouch. According to PTI, this marks the continuation of a practice she introduced in 2019 when she moved away from the colonial-era Budget briefcase. Sitharaman initially replaced the traditional briefcase with a red cloth folder tied with a string and featuring the national emblem. In 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she took a further step towards modernisation by opting for a paperless Budget, using a digital tablet instead of physical documents. She has since continued this format, bringing the tablet in a red case to Parliament.

If your social calendar for the next few weeks is overflowing with wedding invites, and you’re scrambling to find outfits that align with the different themes, you are not alone. Wedding season is in full swing, and for some that might mean an excuse to shop, while others may not want to drop the ball on their budget. Choose garments with bold floral or geometric embroidery to amplify the festive energy.• Crafted comfort: Haldi is often outdoors; lightweight fabrics such as silk-linen blends adorned with intricate thread work ensure comfort and elegance.• Effortless pairings: Pair the outfit with tailored dhotis or trousers featuring subtle embroidered hems, creating a cohesive yet understated look.Sangeet night/Cocktail party: Embodying glamour• Sculptural embroidery: For an evening brimming with dance and drama, opt for sharply tailored bandhgalas or asymmetrical jackets featuring intricate metallic thread work, inspired by celestial or abstract patterns.• Power dressing: Experiment with draped trousers or modern co-ord sets that combine traditional embroidery with contemporary silhouettes, ensuring every move is a statement.• Bold fabrics: Velvet, satin, or silk with detailed sequin or zardozi embellishments reflect the glamour of the night, keeping you effortlessly stylish on the dance floor.Wedding ceremony: Regal reverence• Heritage elegance: Sherwanis featuring dense, hand-embroidered motifs are the epitome of grandeur. Asuka Couture’s designs often draw inspiration from architectural and floral patterns, creating timeless pieces.• Layered artistry: Pair the sherwani with a stole or shawl embroidered with contrasting or complementary patterns, adding depth and richness to your attire.• Traditional palette: Opt for shades of ivory, gold, or deep maroons with intricate embellishments that honour cultural heritage while making a bold style statement.Reception: The pinnacle of sophistication • Tailored refinement: A bespoke tuxedo with embroidered lapels or bold detailing on the shoulder channels contemporary luxury.• Sophisticated embellishments: Look for intricate embroidery that transforms a formal suit into an artistic masterpiece, whether through cosmic motifs or abstract detailing.• Polished accents: Pair the tuxedo with glossy leather shoes and a silk pocket square, ensuring your look is as sleek as it is memorable.Styling tips for destination weddingsDestination weddings can be a great weekend away with your cherished friends and family. If you are the kind to stress over limited baggage and your wedding attire, you are not alone. It can be overwhelming to look your best and match your clothes with the right accessories and footwear. Sajeda Lehry, designer and founder of Sajeda Lehry, shares versatile styling tips for destination weddings:1.  Opt  for versatile pairs: Pack neutral or pastel blouses and pair them with multiple lehengas or skirts. A dupatta can double as a stole for a Western dress. 2.  Choose lightweight fabrics: Chiffon, georgette, and crepe are easy to pack and carry while giving you a breezy yet chic look. 3.  Minimal accessories with maximum impact: Carry statement jewellery that works across outfits—like a multi-layered necklace or chandelier earrings. 4.  Multi-functional footwear: Nude or metallic heels and stylish flats can match almost all outfits. 5.  Layer smartly: A kurta- bundi  combination allows you to mix and match, offering flexibility and reducing luggage without sacrificing style.  Common fashion faux pas to avoid when attending a weddingLehry and Mohnani list fashion mistakes you need to steer clear from:Ignoring dress codes Respect the theme or formality of each event. Overdressing for a casual Haldi or underdressing for a formal reception can make you stand out for the wrong reasons.Over-accessorisingLet bold embroidery and refined tailoring take centre stage. Choose accessories that complement rather than overpower your outfit.Ill-fitting attireEven the most elaborate embroidery loses its charm in an ill-fitted garment. Impeccable tailoring is non-negotiable.Clashing coloursBe mindful of colour palettes that may conflict with the event’s aesthetic or overshadow the bride or groom.Wearing uncomfortable shoesWeddings often involve long hours and dancing. Opt for stylish yet comfortable footwear. You would rather be having fun instead of putting band aids all over your feet!Elevate by accessorising Mohnani shares five essential accessories for elevating any look.• Exquisite brooches: A handcrafted brooch with intricate detailing adds a touch of regal sophistication to any sherwani or bandhagala.• Layered stoles: Opt for embroidered stoles with bold patterns or metallic accents, adding a layer of luxury to both traditional and contemporary looks.• Textured footwear: Handcrafted juttis or leather loafers with ornate embroidery or embossed details perfectly complement wedding ensembles.• Cufflinks and watches: Sleek, engraved cufflinks paired with a classic timepiece elevate formalwear to the realm of timeless elegance.• Pocket squares: Choose embroidered or textured pocket squares that echo the motifs or color palette of your outfit.

Paris Men’s Fashion Week: AP Dhillon makes debut at Pharrell Williams' LV show

In a monumental fusion of haute couture, music, and cultural integration, acclaimed Punjabi music phenomenon AP Dhillon joined an elite roster of global celebrities as he made his debut at the Paris Men’s Fashion Week. He was present at the show for Pharrell Williams, who headlined the official launch of Paris Men's Fashion Week on Tuesday night with his highly anticipated Louis Vuitton Men's Fall/Winter 2025-26 show. This historic appearance marked the first time an India-born Punjabi music artist attended Paris Men's Fashion Week, further cementing the luxury house's commitment to cultural diversity under Williams' creative direction. The show, which marks Nigo's return to Louis Vuitton following his celebrated 2020 capsule collection with the late Virgil Abloh, drew an exceptional array of cultural luminaries, including Jackson Wang, Bam Bam, Victor Wembanyama, Leon Marchand, BTS's J-Hope, AP Dhillon, Travis Scott, Future Pluto Hendricks, Don Toliver, Pusha T, Big Smoke, Boozy, Sabrina Elba, Idris Elba, Bradley Cooper, ASAP Nast, Aron Pierre, Adrien Brody, J Balvin, Dylan Wang, Slick Rick the Ruler, and Tyshawn Jones. These attendees, representing a wide range of artistic and cultural influences, contributed to a night that celebrated global diversity and creativity. The singer-songwriter, rapper, and record producer wore an elevated workwear blouson, crafted from silk-wool double-face fabric layered over Japanese denim skate jeans in a versatile light blue wash, paired with the signature LV Checker range of military-inspired boots. The look highlighted the marriage of streetwear utility with traditional luxury that has become Williams' hallmark. The Punjabi singer, who made his debut at the fashion week, said, "Being present at this intersection of culture and luxury, especially in a space as iconic as the Louvre, represents a pivotal moment not just for me, but for the entire creative community. Pharrell's vision for Louis Vuitton embraces authentic multiculturalism, and I'm honored to be part of this narrative that's reshaping the fashion landscape." The show, which transformed the Louvre into an unprecedented fashion spectacle, continues Williams' tradition of utilising Paris's most prestigious landmarks as backdrops for his collections, following his previous presentations at the Pont Neuf, Jardin d'Acclimatation, and UNESCO headquarters. Dhillon's presence at this landmark show, alongside the collaboration between Williams and streetwear pioneer Nigo showcased Louis Vuitton's aim to bridging diverse cultural influences in contemporary luxury fashion and popularizing streetwear's visibility in high fashion.

Donald Trump's inauguration: Melania Trump brings steely fashion game back

Where in the world is Melania Trump? She made her return to Washington in a sharply tailored outfit exuding international woman of mystery, as her husband once again became president of the United States. Her long navy coat and matching wide-brimmed hat -- which shielded her eyes in most photos and hindered her commander-in-chief husband's attempts to give her a peck before his swearing-in -- drew snark comments on social media and a flurry of comparisons to a 1980s video game character. "Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?" quipped the internet, referring to the franchise that spun off into a popular 1990s geography game show for kids, and featured a criminal mastermind dressed in a long, carmine trench coat and eye-obscuring fedora. Melania Trump's silk-wool coat and skirt were Adam Lippes, an independent American designer based in New York, an ensemble paired with an ivory blouse tightly wrapped at the Slovenian-born former model's neck. "The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump," said Lippes in a statement that emphasised American manufacturing over political ideology. "Mrs. Trump's outfit was created by some of America's finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world." The hat was by New York milliner Eric Javits. "She cut the figure of a mafia widow or high-ranking member of an obscure religious order, and a bit of 'My Fair Lady,'" wrote Rachel Tashjian, style critic for The Washington Post.SEE PHOTOS: Melania Trump's fashion game steals the show at Donald Trump's inauguration 'Armor'American first ladies don't get much of a voice -- but their sartorial choices are scrutinised for subtext. The late Rosalynn Carter, for example, drew strong reactions by wearing a dress she had already worn -- gasp! -- when her husband Jimmy was inaugurated in 1977. The point was to show empathy for the economic struggles of Americans, but sometimes what the people really want is aspirational glamour. In recent years, several first ladies have turned to independent designers for inaugural events: in 2021, Jill Biden wore a sparkling blue coat-and-dress combo by Markarian, a small brand in New York. Michelle Obama made waves in 2009 in a lemon-colored outfit by Isabel Toledo, wearing Thom Browne at her husband's second swearing-in. She donned gowns by Jason Wu to both series of inaugural balls. Melania Trump channeled Jackie Kennedy to kick off her first turn in the White House, sporting Ralph Lauren -- a heritage-brand favorite on both sides of the political aisle -- to the daytime events in 2017. She swapped her powder-blue cashmere dress and matching asymmetrical bolero jacket with opera gloves for a silk crepe gown by Herve Pierre that year, both looks that signaled a sense of buoyancy as she began her new role as a political wife. Her shadowy-chic ensemble on Monday marked a sharp departure as she entered tenure two. Her evening outfit -- once again by Herve Pierre, who is her stylist -- was less severe but kept an edge. The first lady wore a white column gown featuring sculptural, serpentine black ribbon detailing with a thick black bejeweled choker to match as she attended the traditional series of inaugural balls. "For her second round as first lady, the fashion game -- the tool she brandishes most often and most forcefully, even if the public sometimes struggles to divine her sartorial messages -- is likely to be one of steely, precise armor, of clothes with brash and exacting tailoring," wrote the Post's Tashjian. "For the past year, she has worn a wardrobe of mostly black, but this does not seem intended to make her disappear into the background."

Nita Ambani dazzles in Kanchipuram saree at Trump’s pre-inauguration dinner

Ahead of USA President-Elect Donald Trump swearing-in on Monday, January 20, Indian entrepreneurs and philanthropists Nita and Mukesh Ambani were among notable guests at the special pre-inauguration reception held in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. Their presence at the event celebrated India’s enduring heritage, strong international ties and growing commitment to fostering shared progress and peace. Decoding Nita Ambani’s look Nita Ambani is not only a businesswoman and philanthropist, but also a fashion icon. Her outfit choices and personal style have often come into focus at her public appearances. Continuing this legacy, she opted for an outfit that reflected Indian craftsmanship and heritage. She wore a traditional Kanchipuram silk saree by Swadesh, featuring over 100 traditional motifs inspired by the spirituality and history of Kanchipuram’s temples. The custom-made saree was woven by National Award-winning artisan B. Krishnamoorthy. Some cultural motifs in the saree include Iruthalaipakshi (double-headed eagle symbolising Lord Vishnu), Mayil (embodying divinity and immortality) and Sorgavasal-inspired patterns (representing India’s folklore). Blending tradition with contemporary elegance, the saree was paired with a custom-made velvet blouse by Manish Malhotra, which featured a built-up neckline and detailed beadwork on the sleeves. Sharing these details about the outfit on Instagram, Manish Malhotra added, “Through this stunning ensemble, Mrs. Ambani celebrated India’s timeless traditions, honored the talent of its artisans, and brought their extraordinary craftsmanship to the global spotlight.” Nita Ambani’s looks are incomplete without exquisite jewellery, which perfectly complements the ensemble. For this event, she completed her look with a rare 200-year-old Indian pendant, crafted in South India – a parrot-shaped piece decorated with emeralds, rubies, diamonds and pearls, made using the Kundan technique with red and green enamel. She opted for emerald stud earrings, kada (bangle) and ring, which further elevated the look. On the other hand, Mukesh Ambani kept it simple and elegant with a black suit, paired with the classic white shirt and red tie.
