Thyroid disorders can have a significant impact on pregnancy and foetal health. An overactive or underactive thyroid can disrupt hormonal balance, affecting the mother's ability to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy. With proper management and care, women with thyroid disorders can mitigate these risks and improve both their well-being and the long-term health of their babies.

Dr Shaifali Patil, gynaecologist and obstetrician, Motherhood Hospitals, Kharghar says, “Thyroid disorders can give a tough time to pregnant women. Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are two common but contrasting conditions that affect the thyroid gland's function. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones, leading to symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and depression. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism is caused by an overactive thyroid gland, resulting in symptoms such as weight loss, anxiety, and rapid heart rate.”

Patil lists down the impact of thyroid problems on pregnancies and foetal health

Hypothyroidism during pregnancy can pose various challenges for both the mother and the developing baby. Expectant mothers must be aware of the potential impact of hypothyroidism on their pregnancy.

Research suggests that untreated hypothyroidism may lead to complications such as preeclampsia, premature birth, and low birth weight in babies. Additionally, inadequate thyroid hormone levels can affect foetal brain development and lead to cognitive impairments in children.  Managing hypothyroidism during pregnancy involves close monitoring and medication adjustments to ensure that thyroid hormone levels are optimal for both the mother and the baby.

The overproduction of thyroid hormones can lead to complications such as low birth weight, premature birth, and preeclampsia. However, with proactive monitoring and proper medical care, women with hyperthyroidism can have successful pregnancies. Maternal thyroid hormones play a crucial role in foetal brain development, making it vital for expectant mothers to manage their thyroid health effectively.

Even children born to mothers with untreated thyroid disorders may be at higher risk for cognitive impairments and developmental delays. The imbalance in maternal thyroid hormones can affect the baby's neurodevelopmental outcomes, underscoring the importance of monitoring and managing thyroid function during pregnancy.

Managing thyroid disorders during pregnancy can be challenging, but with the right steps, it is possible to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Monitor your thyroid levels throughout the pregnancy. This may involve regular blood tests and adjustments to medication as needed. Maintaining a balanced diet is essential for managing thyroid problems during pregnancy. Consuming foods rich in iodine, such as seafood and dairy products, can help support thyroid function. Stress-reducing techniques like Yoga or meditation in your daily routine can help manage cortisol levels, which can impact thyroid health.

Connecting with others who have similar experiences can provide valuable insights and emotional support throughout this journey. By taking these proactive steps to manage thyroid problems during pregnancy, women can optimise their health and well-being for themselves and their growing baby.
