Early morning concerts are no longer a novelty. But one that starts at 6.30 am and continues until 3 am the next morning certainly is. Seventeen celebrated artistes from the Indian classical music fraternity will take the stage in consecutive sessions at 8 Prahar, which the organisers claim is the longest classical event to be held in the world. The idea behind the show is to celebrate the eight prahars that form an important part of the Indian classical music tradition. Conceptualised by Pandit Jasraj's daughter Durga, the concert will feature the Gundecha brothers, Pandit Ronu Majumdar, Devaki Pandit, Sanjeev Abhyanakar, Rahul Sharma, Rakesh Chaurasia, Jayateerth Mevundi, Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash, Kaushiki Chakraborty, Niladri Kumar and Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj.

"Most concerts these days are limited to a few hours in the evening. Hindustani classical music boasts of traditional ragas for each prahar, and some of them are not performed frequently. The aim of the show is to introduce the younger generation of music lovers to these incredible ragas that are meant for the entire day," says Pandit Jasraj, who will take the stage at 11.45 am.

Niladri Kumar is looking forward to performing in front of a live audience. "All the artistes are practising different ragas, not just the conventional evening ones, to make it a different experience. I'll be presenting the kausi kanada melody. The show's format is challenging, and I am looking forward to it," says Kumar. Devaki Pandit is buried in practice to ensure she does justice to the idea behind the show. "It will be an extraordinary experience to see 17 maestros perform over 21 hours," she says. Ayaan adds, "I am particularly looking forward to Pandit Jasrajji's recital. His performances are a lesson in how to keep music pure."
