A four-year-old girl's private parts were burned with tongs allegedly by her grandmother in Haryana's Sirsa district. As per initial reports, the incident took place on July 9, but it came to light only on Thursday after she was rescued by members of the District Child Protection Committee. Besides taking the minor to a hospital, members of the child welfare group also alerted the cops. The accused is yet to be arrested.
Apparently, the elderly woman burnt the minor with tongs as the family wanted a boy. The girl's father is believed to have told the committee members that "it would have been better had the child been a boy."
Incidentally, in 2015, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme was launched in Haryana by the Centre to improve the dismal sex ratio in the state. But, CM Manohar Lal Khattar had said in March that the ratio had improved in the last year and it stood at 950 girls to 1,000 boys.
