The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officers arrested three Ugandan nationals at Mumbai Airport and seized 2,197 grams of cocaine worth Rs 21.97 crore from them, news agency ANI reported.


Based on specific intelligence that a syndicate of Ugandan nationals would be attempting to smuggle narcotics into India, the officers of DRI Mumbai intercepted the accused who had arrived at Mumbai Airport from Entebbe, a statement said.


On questioning, all three passengers admitted to ingesting capsules containing narcotic drugs for smuggling into India. They were produced before the magistrate and, as per the court order, were admitted to a nearby government hospital, the statement added.


The three fliers purged 170 capsules containing 2,197 grams of cocaine, valued at Rs 21.97 crore in the illicit market, which was seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Further investigation is in progress. More updates on the matter are awaited.

Undertrial prisoner held for drug trafficking found dead in Raipur jail cell

A 38-year-old Nigerian national was found dead inside his cell in the Raipur Central Jail on Tuesday, a police officer said.

Patrick UB K Baoko, an undertrial prisoner, was arrested in 2020 on the charge of trafficking drugs, news agency PTI reported.

The officer said no suicide note was found from the scene.

"We received information from the jail at 1 pm that Patrick UB K Baoko has committed suicide inside his cell", City Superintendent of Police (Kotwali) Kesari Nandan Nayak said.

As per the preliminary information, Baoko could not communicate with other prisoners owing to the language barrier, as he could speak only English, PTI reported.

A detailed investigation will reveal his medical history, the police officer said, adding that further investigation is underway.

Drugs worth Rs 17.6 cr destroyed in Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh Police destroyed 35,000 kg of marijuana, 39 kg of hashish oil, and other drugs worth Rs 17.6 crore in Anakapalli district on Tuesday, PTI reported.

According to an official release, the drugs were destructed at the Coastal Waste Management Project in Parawada, under the supervision of the drug disposal committee.

The confiscated marijuana was linked to 459 cases, resulting in the arrest of 1,304 individuals and the seizure of 205 vehicles. Of those arrested, 871 were from Andhra Pradesh, while 433 were from other states, the release added.
