Slumdog Millionaire's Sound engineer Resul Pookutty, who won an award for Best Music, shares his experiences before and after winning the BAFTA Award for Best Music in London on Sunday night.
Sound engineer Resul Pookutty is no stranger to London, but driving through the streets yesterday was a utopian task. "We were heading to the Royal Opera House where BAFTA was held and I couldn't help but feel strange to be sitting in a tux and driving in an S class. All I could remember when I was passing by those same streets years ago, but on foot and working for films on a shoestring budget. It felt like fate had dealt me the best hand that night," said Pookutty, in a telephonic interview with MiD DAY from his hotel room in London.

Pookutty defined the experience as thrilling especially since his own award was after colleague and fellow Indian A R Rahman bagged the award for Best Music. "I was screaming like a madman when Rahman won and then only a little while later, we got the honour. It's a great sense of fulfillment," said Pookutty, who owns a sound studio in Andheri.
Fumbling with his thank you speech, Pookutty said that he hadn't had anything prepared but ended up thanking fewer people than he meant to. "There I was, up on the stage, and in the corner of my eye I could see Brad Pitt and Kate Winslet and my mouth went dry. I just wanted to say that this award was for all the sound dogs like myself who are struggling to make a difference."
Another unexpected compliment was for Pookutty's tuxedo for the evening. "I must admire her perseverance. I was so bogged down about what to wear for the big night and at one time I even thought that I'd just put on a mundu. However, my friend Isha convinced me otherwise and I finally ended up in a tux that got me more than one compliment during the evening. Even the film's editor Chris Dickens wanted a tux like mine," laughed Pookutty.
Pookutty's next challenge will be the Cinema Audio society award ceremony that will take place on Valentine's Day in Los Angeles before the Oscars where he is again nominated in the Best Sound category. "I have no expectations. I'm just looking to have a good time," he said.
