The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Be there to show you care
SoBo is fighting its couldn’t-care-less image with a seminar called Meet Your Candidate scheduled for Sunday, April 6 at the Meher Apartments lawns. The city’s posh set have a dismal track record when it comes to voting.

Many of them are away on their summer foreign jaunts when the elections have come around. Once again the Altamount Road Area Citizens Committee (ARACC) along with the Pedder Road Residents Association, Carmichael Road Citizens Committee and Nepean Sea Road Citizens Forum is urging residents to go out and vote, beginning with the Meet Your Candidates Meeting. Letters have gone out to residents and awareness is being created about the meeting.

We hear that Milind Deora (Congress, in alliance with the NCP), Bala Nandgaonkar (MNS), Meera Sanyal (AAP) and Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena, in alliance with the BJP) have confirmed attendance.

Speeches will be followed by an interactive session, after which, time permitting, the candidates and residents could mingle post the meet. One does not know about that but let’s remind the swish set that it is Lok Sabha, not Lok Muah, Muah, so they should hold off on the air kissing.

Rather neat, Punith
Hot shot fashion designer Padma Shri Wendell Rodricks has picked the poster submitted by Hyderabad-based graphic designer Punith Mahesh as the winning design of the KASHISH International Poster Competition.

This poster design contest saw entries from across India Mumbai, Hyderabad to Chandigarh, Goa and Shillong; there were some from Malaysia, Indonesia and Estonia (exotic, yes, we know), too.

Punith’s poster will be the look of the fifth edition of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, scheduled to be held from May 21 to May 25 this year.

KASHISH 2014, is South Asia’s and India’s biggest and only mainstream queer film festival to be held in Mumbai at a multiplex and at Alliance Française de Bombay. It is the first and only gay and lesbian film festival in India to be held in a mainstream theatre.

The competition asked designers to creatively interpret this year’s festival theme ‘Dare To Dream’. Wendell said of the winning design, “The stark graphics and the concept of exploring the mind makes this poster a winner.

Explaining his design Punith said that the butterflies represent the flight of human ideas, imagination and innovation, while the stars depict the infinite world out there for the ideas to soar.

Hmmm. Interesting. Now if only India’s political parties and courts would be a bit like the butterfly — with a flight arc of openness and inclusiveness. The community still dares to dream.

Then and now and how
It’s three years for India’s 2011 World Cup triumph today — achieved on a hot summer night at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Here’s what has changed for Indian cricket since that red-letter day:

Sachin Tendulkar, who played the last of his six World Cups, is now enjoying the charms of a retired life.

Virender Sehwag is fighting hard to impress 1983 World Cupper and chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil and thus return to the team.

Gautam Gambhir... same as above.

Duncan Fletcher is now coach after Gary Kirsten decided enough is enough. For Fletcher, nothing is enough and he has reportedly got an extension in contract.

Many forget that S Sreesanth was part of that World Cup XI. He would be wise not to think about a recall after the spot fixing controversy.

Munaf Patel is confined to domestic cricket. At the moment, he is in the city with the Baroda team for the Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 West Zone competition.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is no longer the undisputed king of the pitch but he’s still hitting them high, wide and handsome. He hit Bangladesh’s Ziaur Rahman to the sightscreen for a six and finished off the game like he did to Nuwan Kulasekara to bring the curtains down on the World Cup final on April 2, 2011. May he lead us to another world title in Bangladesh on Sunday. Then, we can celebrate two anniversaries next April.
