Hostel warden says permission needed for longer trips
IN the wake of the alleged gang rape of a US student, where nearly all involved were hostel residents, hostels in the city have decided to take a stricter approach to existing rules about deadlines.u00a0u00a0
Three of the accused in the rape, Anish Borkataki, Jaskaran Singh and Vinamra Soni were residents of ISH hostel in Churchgate where a rule in the undertaking signed before admission into the hostel states that: 'In case a student needs to remain away from the hostel after 12 midnight on any day, he should obtain prior permission from the warden in writing.'
None of the three took permission from the warden before going out on Saturday, the night the incident took place.
ISH hostel warden Dhaneswar Harichandan only said that permission was needed for longer trips. "If a student wants to go out of the hostel for one or two days, they should give in writing for the permission. These three students might have gone out of the hostel before 12 midnight and so they didn't ask for permission. But if students don't turn up all night, we usually ask them why they were out."
Dilip Shetty, registrar of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, said, "From April 21 onwards, students will not be allowed to come back to the hostel after 12 midnight and if they do, they need to submit their I-cards to the warden and explain why they were late. The rule was not strictly applied as these were postgraduate students and there were also a strong influence from the unions."
