Two constables suspended after molester flees from their custody

Three policemen faced action after they let a man accused of sexually harassing a minor slip from their hand. A 15-year-old girl had alleged that the man had molested her when she was returning from the Republic Day celebrations at Marine Drive.

The minor victim had told the police that after the function at Netaji Subashchandra Bose Road (Marine Drive) concluded, she and her family were on their way back. Since there was a huge crowd, an unknown man managed to take advantage of the situation and touched the girl inappropriately.

The victim immediately informed her family about the incident. With the help of the people around, the man was soon caught. “They handed the accused to constables Kishore Patil of MRA Marg police station and Vishwanath Salve of Dongri police station, both of whom were on bandobast duty for Republic Day.

The accused told them that the reason he was caught was because he was crossing the road during the parade, which was not allowed. The constables then left him,” said Krishna Prakash, additional commissioner of police, south region.

Along with the erring duo, Parag Ukride, a police sub-inspector was transferred, as he did not inform his seniors about the incident and the molestation case was registered only on January 27, after seniors officials learned of it.

The police have now registered a case under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code. Cops are checking CCTV footage to find leads to help arrest the accused.
