The Kalachowkie police have booked a woman and three members of her family for allegedly harassing her estranged husband to the point of death by suicide.

According to the Kalachowkie police, the deceased, Rahul Parmar, 25, got engaged to the accused, Poonam Kataria, 28, in May 2019. In his statement to the police, Rahul’s father, Vishram, has told the police that soon after the engagement, Rahul found Poonam’s behaviour to be strange. Rahul wanted to break off the marriage but, according to Vishram, the Katarias threatened to file a false complaint of demanding dowry against the Parmars, due to which the couple got married in 2020.

After the marriage, it came to light Poonam was in a relationship with a Gujarat resident. “The Katarias took Poonam home but also threatened to file a case of domestic violence against him if he tried to formally end the marriage. On December 18, 2020, after repeated threats, Rahul died by suicide,” said an officer with the Kalachowkie police station. The Parmars subsequently approached the Mazagaon Court, and on Saturday, the court directed the police to book Poonam, her parents and another relative.
