Mumbai: Three workers of Western Railway die in a train accident in Vasai

The employees were identified as Vasu Mitra (Chief Signalling Inspector), Somnath Uttam Lambutre (Electrical Signalling Maintainer) and Sachin Wankhede (Helper). all of whom work for the Signalling Department of the Mumbai Division.

Three Western Railway Signalling department employees were killed in a train accident in Vasai on Monday night. According to railway officials, the three employees went to examine track failure at Vasai when a running train crushed them, killing them all on the spot.


The employees were identified as Vasu Mitra (Chief Signalling Inspector at Bhayander), Somnath Uttam Lambutre (Electrical Signalling Maintainer at Vasai Road) and Sachin Wankhede (Helper). The deceased were attached to WR's Mumbai Division Signalling Department. 


On January 22, 2024, all three victims went to attend signalling point issues in the evening. While mending, they were hit by a passing local train on the UP slow line between Vasai Road and Naigaon at mile 49/18 and perished on the spot at 8.50 p.m.Senior officials rushed to the spotSenior officials rushed to the spot/ Hanif Patel


The Divisional Railway Manager and other senior railway officials hurried to the scene and provided all necessary support to the deceased's family members. The family members have each received Rs 55,000 as immediate relief.

Further, ex gratia payment and other payments will be disbursed to the deceased’s family members within 15 days. The families of Sachin Wankhede and Somnath will receive approximately Rs. 40 lakhs while the family of Vasu Mitra will receive around Rs. 1.24 crore.

The Western Railway has also ordered an inquiry.
