27 January,2025 05:53 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentFour trees and a toilet block are blocking the demolition of the Sion Road Over Bridge, which has been shut since August 2024. The railways have sent a letter to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) expressing urgency in addressing these hurdles, as work on the bridge has been severely delayed, the officials said. The bridge is being rebuilt as part of a larger project to lay the fifth and sixth railway lines between Parel and Kurla. “There are four trees, two in the east and two in the west. In addition to this, there is a public toilet on the footpath, high-power cables, and electrical utilities for which shutting the Dharavi underpass is mandatory. The diversion of the BMC colony's drain, the road, and the water pipeline is also required. CR officials have highlighted several obstacles that have stalled the demolition. Work on piling and strengthening the sidewalls is currently in progress, and so far, 10 percent of the work has been completed. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, in their structural audit report, recommended dismantling the existing bridge and reconstructing a new one with steel girders and RCC slabs. Furthermore, the existing Sion Road Over Bridge is obstructing the proposed fifth and sixth railway lines between CSMT and Kurla, and therefore it needs to be dismantled and reconstructed.

27 January,2025 02:12 PM IST | Mumbai | Prasun ChoudhariA court in Maharashtra's Thane district has acquitted two men accused of raping a woman in 2021, observing the victim and other witnesses were not traceable and charges against the accused were not proved, reported news agency PTI. Additional Sessions Judge AS Bhagwat, in his order on January 20, held the prosecution failed to prove the charges against the accused, Vijay Shetty (29) and Mohammad Sarvar Abdulla Shah (39), and they need to be given the benefit of the doubt, reported PTI. A copy of the order was made available on Monday. The prosecution told the court that on May 22, 2021, the two men forced the victim (age not mentioned in the order) to consume liquor excessively in a room in a building at Sabegaon in the Diva area and allegedly raped her, reported PTI. They also beat up the woman, the prosecution alleged. The two men were charged under various legal provisions, including for gang rape. The judge noted that the deposition of a lone prosecution witness, a panch witness, could not establish anything against the duo, reported PTI. Moreover, the victim and the other witnesses are not traceable and despite a notice to the prosecution, it could not produce them before the court, the judge said, reported PTI. Hence, it is held that the charges against the accused are not proven and they are acquitted, the court said. Thane court acquits two persons after 9 years in attempt to murder case A court in Thane district acquitted two persons accused of attacking and injuring a man nine years ago, citing insufficient evidence in Maharashtra, reported news agency PTI. Additional sessions judge Amit M Shete acquitted Imran Akhtar Sayyad and Anant Jairam Bhagat in a 2015 attempt to murder case. The copy of the order, dated a week ago on January 13, was made available on January 20. A group of men attacked the victim, Sandeep Gadekar, with weapons in Kalwa on August 31, 2015, as per the case details. The man sustained severe injuries to his head, neck, and abdomen and was hospitalised. The Kalwa police registered a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting armed with a deadly weapon), 307 (attempt to murder), and 452 (house trespass to assault), among others. In its order, the court noted that there were critical omissions in the victim's testimony, which contradicted his earlier statements to the police. The court also took note of the victim and his family's criminal background. The victim had been externed due to his involvement in criminal activities, reported PTI. Judge Shete ruled that the evidence against the accused was insufficient to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and directed the police to apprehend the remaining absconding accused and file a separate chargesheet. 27 January,2025 01:02 PM IST | Thane | mid-day online correspondentShiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has called out certain news channels for allegedly misrepresenting a self-proclaimed individual as a spokesperson for the party. In a fiery social media post, Aaditya Thackeray named "a fraud named Sanjay Gupta" who has been appearing on select television and YouTube channels, claiming affiliation with the Shiv Sena (UBT). “Despite the Party clarifying multiple times that the crook is not a spokesperson, and has nothing to do with the party, these selected channels call him on their shows as our ‘spokesperson’ or ‘supporter,’” Thackeray stated. "We will be taking legal action against this. It is shameful that a few YouTube channels and channels need such crooks for their own TRPs," he added. Aaditya ridicules MoUs signed by Maharashtra govt at Davos; says only 11 of 54 firms are foreign Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday said only 11 of the 54 companies with which the Maharashtra government signed MoUs in Davos during the World Economic Forum are from abroad, while the remaining 43 are Indian. Addressing a press conference, Thackeray said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis could have balanced the signing of Memorandums of Understanding with meetings with heads of state and federal governments as well as social entrepreneurs instead of spending Rs 20-25 crore on the Davos trip. "Let me assure you there is no other place in the world like Davos for global networking, especially for an industrial and progressive state like Maharashtra," he said, adding that people must not be fooled by public relations exercises over the MoUs. "In total, MoUs have been signed with 54 companies across the board in Davos by the Government of Maharashtra. Of these, 43 companies are Indian, while 11 are foreign companies. Of the 43 companies, 31 are located in Maharashtra," Thackeray pointed out. According to the state government, 61 MoUs have been signed during the World Economic Forum entailing an investment of Rs 15.70 lakh crore, which could potentially create 16 lakh jobs. The CM's staff and office misaligned his programme and somewhere ensured that this trip was mired with the MoUs signed, Thackeray claimed. Such MoUs could have been signed at the 'Magnetic Maharashtra' event, which incidentally has not been held for the past two years, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader further said. Why has the state government not organised 'Magnetic Maharashtra' to attract investments when others like Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are holding such events, he asked. Many of the MoUs signed at Davos, especially the ones with realtors, were not necessary because they had already bought land and the investment would have come any which way, Thackeray claimed. Taking a dig at what he claimed were "laughable" MoUs, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said, "Next time even road contractors will be taken to Davos". He slammed state minister Uday Samant for reaching Davos late and coming back to India early. Samant was not even present during the inauguration of the Maharashtra Pavilion at Davos, Thackeray said. Thackeray ridiculed Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde by saying the latter was not in the delegation to Davos despite MMRDA and CIDCO, which are part of his Urban Development portfolio, being involved in some of the MoUs signed. 27 January,2025 12:17 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentMaharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will ask NCP minister Dhananjay Munde to step down if any evidence is found linking him to sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh's murder, his cabinet colleague Chandrakant Patil has said, reported news agency PTI. The BJP leader on Sunday said that a comprehensive probe is being conducted into the murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. Walmik Karad, an associate of NCP minister Munde, has been arrested in an extortion case linked to the sarpanch's killing. Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted, tortured and killed on December 9 for trying to stop an extortion bid against an energy firm operating a windmill project there. Munde, the NCP MLA from Parli in Beed district, is under attack from some of the ruling alliance colleagues and the opposition over his links with Karad, PTI stated. "The investigation into the murder of Santosh Deshmukh is underway. Each matter is different. As the head of the government, Devendra Fadnavis is fully capable of making decisions. If he believes there is substance in the allegations, he will act immediately and ask Munde to resign," Patil said. "The Maharashtra government has already seized properties of the accused in sarpanch Deshmukh murder case. Stringent charges have been invoked and the probe is going on," the BJP leader said. Patil also stated the police machinery is actively investigating the case, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed for a probe into it. Additionally, a committee headed by a retired judge has been constituted to oversee the inquiry, the minister added. Steps are being taken, including invocation of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Walmik Karad and other accused, Patil pointed out. The process of seizing Karad's assets is also underway, he added. Beed Sarpanch murder: Attach Walmik Karad's properties to ensure he doesn't transfer them, says BJP leader The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the murder of Beed Sarpanch murder case must attach the properties of Walmik Karad to prevent him from transferring them to his aides, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Suresh Dhas stated on Saturday. "The people of Maharashtra will rest only after the killers are hanged," Dhas declared at a protest rally held at Azad Maidan against the Beed Sarpanch murder and the custodial death of Parbhani youth Somnath Suryavanshi. According to news agency PTI, Dhas also pointed out that Beed resident Mahadev Munde had been murdered 15 months ago, but his killers remain at large. "How can Bhaskar Kendre, a police officer, be posted in Parli for the last 15 years? The police in Beed are under political pressure. The SIT must ensure that Karad’s properties are attached so he cannot transfer them to his aides," Dhas said. (With inputs from PTI)
