Lower-rung cops allege money from the Karnataka Police Benevolent Fund is mostly being used to fund education of senior police officials' children

Police constables in the state are not happy with the handling of the Karnataka Police Benevolent Fund created by former commissioner of police Neelam Achyut Rao in 2006. The fund, which was created to help children of policemen of head constable rank and below pursue higher studies, has not only allegedly shrunk from the promised Rs 1 crore to Rs 80 lakh but also been granted mainly to children of senior officials.u00a0

Junior officers on condition of anonymity told MiD DAY that the fund was managed smoothly till Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari assumed charge from Rao in 2008.

"My daughter topped an engineering entrance test. It is a great opportunity for her but I am unable to pay the fee. This is why I applied but I am not sure if I will get the grant because there are over 850 applications like mine on the commissioner's table. Moreover, it will soon be too late as admissions will soon come to a close. Many of my colleagues are struggling with this problem. It is impossible to make ends meet in Bangalore on a salary of Rs 12,000."

Additional Commissioner of Police (administration) U Nisar Ahmed said it was incorrect to say that grants from the fund were only being made to senior officers.

"We continue to offer money from the fund to policemen across ranks. The chief minister recently distributed checks to some applicants. I need applications with specific information on what the money will be used for in order to grant the amount. We routinely verify the details before proceeding with the grant. I will look into the specific instance that you have brought to my notice and respond appropriately."
