If you are a Punekar who wants to make it big as an entrepreneur, the Saturday Club will show you how. "We inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship and help each other grow rich. Becoming an entrepreneur is like learning to drive a car. You need experience before you hit the roads. We give budding entrepreneurs the necessary guidance," explained Shrirang Gokhale (59), chairperson of the club's Kothrud branch.
Early days
Nine years ago, Madhavrao Bhide, an ex-serviceman, started the Saturday club in Mumbai. "He felt that Maharashtrians tend to get a job rather than set up their own business. He wanted to change this mindset," said Gokhale. Soon, the idea spread to Pune and in 2001, the city got its own chapter, with branches in Kothrud and City.
The Pune chapter has 60 members who are either established businessmen or budding ones. The Saturday Club does not restrict its membership to Maharashtrians and welcomes anyone who has entrepreneurial dreams.
Activities
The Club arranges for eminent personalities to give lectures and hold workshops on entrepreneurship. Members also go on industry visits to learn from successful businesses. This month, they are holding an exhibition-cum-sale where they will showcase products such as gift items, food items and handicrafts which the members have created in their own businesses. The sale will be on from today till Sunday.
Help others grow
Talking about his experience with the club, Amit Modak (36) a distributor of children's books, said, "It's been very enriching. We share experiences and help others to grow." Added Vivek Medhekar (45), a manufacturer, "Each member acts as a consultant for others. It's a fantastic feeling." The club hopes to reach the 100-member mark soon.
