Adoption rates rise due to infertility

Adoption is on a high and most of those bringing home a baby are from the IT sector.

Infertility

"People choose adoption for many reasons, but the main one is infertility. It is estimated that of every 10 people, at least two are infertile. Also, people from the IT sector are more prone to infertility due to erratic hours and bad lifestyle," says Dr Venkatesh Rao, relationship expert.

"I was infertile and due to polycystic ovaries (PCOs), I couldn't conceive. After eight years of being childless, we felt we had to adopt," says Megana B, a graphic designer.

"My husband and I tried fertility treatments for a couple of years but the emotional effects of fertility treatment as well as the financial burden made us consider adoption. We started the process in February 2004, were approved in May 2004 and received our first placement in August. Less than two years later, we adopted a baby boy," said Bina Ashok.

Change in profile

Dr Aloma Lobo, state Voluntary Coordinating Agency chairperson, says, "The profile of childless couples who go in for adoption is undergoing a change. Most are urban, educated, middle-high income, first-time parents, with high awareness levels. The average age of couples who adopt is between late 20s and mid-40s."
