The ban on scarves has come as a rude shock and an unfair decision to many in the city. But the police are still undecided over how to handle women who wear burkhas.

The scarf decision is already facing criticism from women, skin specialists, and Muslim organisations. Maulana Mehmood Dariyabadi, general secretary, All India Ulema Council, thundered, "I do not understand how the police will control terrorism by banning burkhas or scarves. Those who wear it follow their culture and if any firm decision is taken in the future, we will think of something."

Even skin specialists think wearing a scarf is not just a fashion statement, but a must, especially during summers. Dr Sunita Dube, skin specialist, Aryan Medi Spa, Mumbai, said, "Scarves prevent the skin and hair from sun-burns, pollution and all kind of rashes. Some people are allergic to sunrays and dirt and those with oily skin need it the most. Getting out of the house without a scarf is not recommended.

Another city skin specialist, Dr Shah added that apart from sunburn, inflammation sets in, which is not good for healthy skin. Women across the city too feel this step unnecessary. Arundhati Bansod, a housewife said, "A scarf is essential during summers, and I don't think that terrorists will move around the city wearing one."

"Ifu00a0 someone hides behind a scarf, the police can always check them. You cannot stop an entire city from wearing scarves."
