15 priests to perform Samuhika Pretha Samskara so that souls of 158 passengers who died in Air India plane crash on Saturday find rest
A group of astrologers and priests are all set to perform samuhika pretha samskara or communal last rites for the 158 victims of the Mangalore air crash.
A team from the Shashwatha Dharmika Kriya Samiti, Srirangapatnaare of over 15 priests will perform homas and havanas at the crash site next week, which they believe, will avert similar accidents in future.

They further believe that ill fate of victims, may trigger similar accidents if last rites are not performed as per the Garuda Purana.

"The Garuda Purana states that souls of those who die in accidents take birth as crows. In order to prevent this proper rites have to be performed.
Also, if the rites are not performed, similar accidents may occur on the site in future," added Sharma.
The team which will perform rituals next Wednesday or Thursday, will also invite Yeddyurappa, as the Garuda Purana states that the head of state has to preside over such ceremonies.
Heads of Sikh, Muslim and Christian communities will also perform rites on the same day the ceremonies will be held.

Rationalist groups in the state have rubbished the claims made by the astrologers.

"This is absolute nonsense," said Hulikal Natraj, secretary, Miracle Research Center, a forum of rational thinkers that bust miracles and superstitious beliefs.
"If they can predict the future, why didn't they predict the accident, which could have saved some lives? This is either a technical or human error. Performing homas or havanas is a superstition.
Theories that dead in souls and ill-fate are nonsense. The authorities should not encourage such hocus-pocus."
