An auto rickshaw driver and a passenger narrowly escaped death in a hit-and-run case around 12.15 am at the Coffee Board junction today.

A speeding car coming from Queens's road hit the rickshaw which was coming from Police Commissioner Road, injuring the driver Santosh Kumar (29), and the passenger K Krishna Swamy (69) badly.

The cops had been busy booking drink driving cases near Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is just a kilometre away, but when informed about the accident reached the spot 45 minutes later.
Driver flees
The injured driver, Santosh, said, "The passenger got on at the Majestic, and I was taking him to Mallesh Palya near Old Airport.
I was crossing the junction at a normal pace, but a speeding car came and hit my auto, injuring us. He didn't even stop, and just sped away. I think we both are very lucky to be alive."

The car hit the auto rickshaw with such a force that the auto toppled and landed on the footpath. The steering and the axel of the rickshaw broke into pieces.
Public and other auto drivers gathered in large numbers at the accident spot and were unhappy with the police for not coming on time.
Nasrulla, another auto driver said, "The police is unfair to us. I am not really surprised that even after informing the control room 45 minutes ago, the police have not arrived to the spot."
Suber Ahmed an auto driver added, "People are afraid to help, thinking that they will get into unnecessary trouble. I took the help of Naushad Pasha, another driver, and brought them to Bowring hospital for treatment."
Car number
Though the number of the speeding car was not noted down, the public and the auto drivers managed to collectu00a0 broken pieces of the number plate at the accident spot at procure it. They arranged them in order to find out the number which will help the police to investigate.
Swamy, the passenger added, "I was returning home fro m a marriage in Erode district (Tamil Nadu). I am still in shock."
There were two similar cases last night at the end of Brigade Road junction, where the police didn't arrive on time, even after they were informed.
On Sunday, a case of hit and run was reported at International Airport Road where two bikers were seriously injured.
