L Mahalingam, the scientist who was found dead near Kaiga last week, may have had a tiff with his wife the night before he went missing.

"He preferred to sleep away from her in another room," said Babu Kolekar, deputy superintendent of police, Uttara Kannada. "That's all I can tell you."

The police haven't formally questioned Mahalingam's wife. The scientist, hailing from Chennai, woke up on June 8 morning and went walking, never to return.

Many theories

Lokanath Mahalingam's absence caused national anxiety as he was associated with a nuclear power plant. His body was found six days later, floating in a river near the Kaiga nuclear plant.

Mahalingam was not a regular morning walker, as many believe. He used go for strolls in the evening, a police source said.

A religious person, Mahalingam frequented the Srinivasa temple near the Kaiga plant employees' quarters.

He attended all religious events, including those held in the vicinity of his workplace. He often went to holy places such as Tirupati and Puttaparti.

Two police teams had left for Tirupati and Puttaparthi to trace him, but returned as news broke that Mahalingam's body had been found.

Suicide?

"It seems to be a case of suicide as there are no injury marks on the body," a source said.

Since the body had badly decomposed it was difficult for them to find out the cause of death.
