The Derby Cafe is what we could call an all-day ATM (any-time menu) cafe. As the affable mau00eetre d' Saif informed us, all the dishes from the sandwiches and shakes to the starters and lasagne are available throughout its open hours, from 12 noon to midnight.

Good news for that odd late lunch or pre-sunset dinner. Its proximity to Bandra and Khar station is another plus.

The music, menu and ambience of this brand new fine dining cafe is much more understated than its open-air six-year-old bistro sibling U Turn, that pumps up the tempo for yuppies and plucky college kids.

We couldn't tie in the derby theme with the Husainesque steed paintings, though, beautiful as they were. It's supposed to expand on the stable theme of U Turn, but somehow got lost in translation.

The food: The menu reflects the sophisticated (read expensive) setting. Sandwiches, burgers, coffees and shakes next to the starters and pan-Asian main course dishes remind you it's a cafe.

Liquor is reasonably priced though we would have liked a wider selection of cocktails. As for Iced Teas, skip the usual peach and lemon; call for a Blue Curacao.

If you are tight on moolah, we suggest you order one of the Indian dishes (Paneer Makhanwala and Butter Chicken are tops) that are a meal in themselves with complimentary naan, Kali Dal, achaar, etc.

We loved Seafood Brochettes (Rs 325); an assortment of seafood grilled on skewers in tomato pesto. The Stir-Fried Prawns (Rs 425); king prawns stir fried with capsicum and spring onions and greens in a peppery tomato gravy were delicious.

Herbed Chicken Supremes (Rs 175) and Crisp Pepper and Salt veggies (Rs 150) were acceptable. Try one of the rich shakes the Alfonse was refreshing for dessert.

AT: On 4th floor, Hotel Evergreen, Guru Gobind Singh Marg, near railway station, Khar (W). Call: 26492895

Derby Cafe didn't know What's On was there. We review anonymously and pay for meals
