Don’t be fooled by claims of a ‘mild’ variant

The many asymptomatic patients or those with relatively less difficulty than we had with the Delta, may lull people into a false sense of complacency that Omicron is mild. They then may let down their guard, but we must take another aspect into consideration that will prove wisdom in the words that there is no reason to take anything for granted just yet.

Experts and doctors are warning against long Covid. Even though the symptoms may be mild initially and one may recover well early, there is a possibility of being troubled by long Covid for as long as a year. A top doc warned seeing his young, healthy colleagues who had contracted Covid earlier, not feeling like their earlier selves for up to a year later.

Physical fatigue continued to dog them and mentally, some experienced brain fog for long periods of time. Others will remember how the second wave had brought about cases of Mucormycosis. Some doctors have warned that we may see some long Covid even after so many cases now.

While that may sound dire right now, the unpredictability of this disease, simply means that we do not ignore anything, do not ignore long Covid, in case the public with its notoriously short memory has forgotten. Like the wise always say, ‘hope for the best and prepare for the worst.’

We can also play our part in the best bit and try to stem the worst by taking all precautions, including of course, vaccinations. Mask up, take the jabs, avoid meeting in groups and isolate if you have any symptoms. These are surely some ways where we must play our part. Long Covid has changed lives forever and not for the good. Not everybody fortunately has long Covid, but it is good reason to rethink the no-need-to-follow-protocol inanity that has overtaken some.
