It is action stations as the city got a Rs 947-crore redevelopment plan for 19 of the most crowded stations to be made ready within 18 months of contracts being given. A report in this paper stated how crowded and cluttered key Mumbai stations are set to go a level up, in order to de-clutter them.

There are plans for multiple decks and foot overbridges. An official in the report said that there are plans for segregated entry-exit points, too. The plan is improvisation and upgradation of a number of stations on the Western and Central line. These stations are very old and have to be upgraded to keep up with the times and increasing footfall. There are plans for green spaces, ATMs, circulating areas and a lot of other aspects that need looking into.

While this is a plan that should be welcomed, we have to add a cautionary note to this announcement, that should bring general cheer to commuters. Authorities must ensure that the work sticks to the timeline, rather than stop ’n’ start, except for things beyond control like the pandemic. Infra that sticks to timelines removes scepticism from the citizenry and creates a healthy respect for city leaders.

We also need to see quality work. Too often, disappointingly, public amenities have been finished only to fall apart very quickly again. Long-term vision and an accent on the best ensures top-of-the-line work.

One understands the huge challenges of work in this city where crowds are relentless and stations are always buzzing. Signage that indicates work is on, lights that alert people in the dark and well-marked alternative routes for usage are a must. Ideally, commuters must have advance warning about a certain portion slated to be closed for refurbishment and an alternative outlined. Announcements over the address system will help too. More power to makeovers, but they should be done correctly.
