Indian-origin man jailed for life for mother's murder at UK home

A 48-year-old Indian-origin man who attacked his 76-year-old mother in their family home in Leicester, eastern England, has been found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Sindeep Singh was arrested after Leicestershire Police discovered the deceased, Bhajan Kaur, with significant injuries to her head and face on May 13. Following a 16-day trial at Leicester Crown Court, Singh was found guilty of murder and sentenced this week to life in prison with a minimum term of 31 years behind bars before being considered for parole. "This was a deeply disturbing case which uncovered the lengths Singh went to, to cover his tracks," said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Sinski from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Murder Investigation Team. "After killing his mother, Singh went out and bought a sack barrow and spade to dig up the garden. He intended burying Mrs Kaur's body but was disturbed before he could do that. The house had been cleaned and there was a very strong smell of disinfectant. There was clear evidence showing the planning after her death," he said. The detective revealed that when Singh was approached by officers, he provided false details and initially claimed to have no knowledge of the incident. But during the police investigation, it was established that Singh acted following several arguments over the ownership of the family home, which he believed had been left to him by his late father. "This has been an extremely distressing and challenging time for Mrs Kaur's family, they have been left devastated at the loss of their dear mother. They have shown immense courage and dignity throughout the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings," he said. "It is unfortunate that this case ended with a trial and the family had to sit through the proceedings and listen to the details of Mrs Kaur's final moments. This is in no way easy for them " they've lost a loved one and will now have to live with the fact that Mrs Kaur's life was taken by one of their own," he added. The court heard how previously Kaur had reported Singh for his behaviour and he was even arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour and released on bail while those enquiries were ongoing. The investigation revealed that Singh had been living in his car on the driveway of the home, and on the day of the murder, Kaur had let him into the house. CCTV evidence showed Singh leaving the property later on the same day and going to purchase a sack and spade from a nearby shop. He then returned to the house on Bolsover Street and when relatives were unable to get hold of Kaur, they went to her home where they discovered her body. When police officers arrived at the scene, they also found that ground in the rear garden had been dug up creating a large hole. Florida pursues charge against suspect in Trump assassination attempt

Florida authorities announced Wednesday that they're pursuing a criminal case against a man accused of trying to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump for a car crash that occurred after law enforcement stopped traffic to catch him. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody said she obtained an arrest warrant for Ryan Wesley Routh, who already is being held on federal charges in the assassination attempt. Moody said she is pursuing a charge of attempted felony murder for a crash that seriously injured a 6-year-old girl after officials shut down traffic on Interstate 95 as they tried to apprehend the suspect. The multivehicle crash happened about 30 minutes after Routh's arrest on I-95, according to the state's investigation, but Moody said it was a result of his actions. The girl, who was travelling with her family, had serious injuries, Moody said. "When you couple those terrible injuries, together with his other criminal conduct, which we believe rises to the level of domestic terrorism, it turns his actions into an attempted felony murder case," she told reporters. Routh's attorney declined to comment Wednesday through a representative. Routh is being held on federal charges of attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and gun crimes. He has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say Routh methodically plotted to kill Trump for weeks before aiming a rifle through the shrubbery as Trump played golf at his West Palm Beach country club on September 15. Before Trump came into view, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent. Routh allegedly aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot. Routh's arrest came two months after Trump was shot and wounded in the ear in an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service acknowledged failings leading up to that shooting but has said security worked as it should have to thwart the potential Florida attack. Days after the Florida assassination attempt, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state would carry out its own investigation parallel to the federal probe, with prosecutors pursuing the most serious charges available under state law. It's not uncommon for state and federal law enforcement agencies to run simultaneous investigations into crimes, as states may be able to bring charges that are unavailable at the federal level " and vice versa. Suspect detained in killing of Russian general in Moscow

Russia’s security service said on Wednesday that it has detained a suspect in the killing of a senior general in Moscow. The suspect was described as an Uzbek citizen recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services. Russia’s Federal Security Service, or FSB, didn’t name the suspect, but said he was born in 1995. The FSB said the suspect had been promised a reward of USD 100,000 and permission to move to a European Union country in exchange for killing Kirillov. The agency stated that, acting on instructions from Ukraine, the suspect travelled to Moscow, where he picked up a homemade explosive device. He then placed the device on an electric scooter and parked it at the entrance to the residential building where Kirillov lived. The suspect then rented a car to monitor the location and set up a camera that livestreamed footage from the scene to his handlers in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Once Kirillov was seen leaving the building, the suspect detonated the bomb. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Santa picks jet ski over sleigh

Dozens of children with disability gathered on Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach on Tuesday to receive presents “and joy” from the white-bearded man himself, a joint effort by the city’s firefighters and nonprofit associations. Under 27°C, firefighter sargeant Thiago Carvalho de Paiva wore Santa Claus costumes in tropical Rio, moving through the water as beachgoers cheered. “We wanted to find a special way for Santa Claus to arrive,” said Renato Grigorovski, a spokesman for Rio’s firefighters’ department. The day began with a show of sniffing dogs displaying their skills and continued through lunch. The celebration reached its peak when Santa arrived on jet ski, making a grand entrance on the shores of Brazil’s postcard city. But it was not all fun and games for Santa. After delivering presents, De Paiva quickly jumped back into the water to rescue three people who appeared to have trouble returning to shore. None was injured. Japan satellite launch aborted once again

A Japanese space startup said its second attempt to launch a rocket carrying satellites into orbit had been aborted minutes after liftoff on Wednesday and destroyed itself again, nine months after the company’s first launch attempt ended in an explosion. Space One’s Kairos No. 2 rocket lifted off from a coastal site in the mountainous prefecture of Wakayama in central Japan. The company said it had aborted the flight after concluding that it was unlikely to complete its mission. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. ‘93 per cent of bank branches in Gaza destroyed’

The World Bank reported that the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip has destroyed approximately 93 per cent of the branches of banks operating in the territory after 15 months of continuous conflict. In a report distributed in Jerusalem, the World Bank added that the war has also destroyed 88 per cent of microfinance institutions, most money exchange services, and 8 percent of insurance companies. The report noted that only three out of 94 ATMs are currently operational across the Gaza Strip, according to consistent data from the World Bank and the Palestinian Monetary Authority. The report highlighted that Palestinians in Gaza are struggling to pay for basic goods and services, including food and medicine, while the disruption to the banking system hampers private sector efforts to resume production, create job opportunities, and pay employee salaries.  94Total no. of ATMs that existed in Gaza Strip Another Gaza evacuation ordered Jerusalem: The Israeli military on Wednesday ordered another evacuation in central Gaza ahead of an offensive in the area, even as Israel and the militant group Hamas appeared to inch closer to a ceasefire in the 14-month war. “This is an advance warning ahead of an offensive,” Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee posted on X. The order included four residential block areas in the urban refugee camp of Bureij, where Adraee claimed that Palestinian militants fired rockets toward Israel. US to update its MTCR export control policies for India

The outgoing Biden administration is in the process of finalising a national security memorandum that will update America's export control policies under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), a move that is likely to facilitate more cooperation between India and US companies in the space sector, the White House said Tuesday. The goal of updating export control policies under the MTCR is to be able to advance commercial space cooperation even further with close partners like India, Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer told reporters during a conference call. 'We are continuing to take steps to further knock down barriers to private sector cooperation, and importantly, we are in the process of finalising national security memorandum that will update our own export control policies under the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR),' Finer said. Finer, Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra visited Houston on Tuesday and met the astronauts of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) who are training at NASA's Johnson Space Center to execute a joint effort of the International Space Station next year. Created in 1987 by G-7 countries, MTCR is an informal political understanding among 35 member states that seeks to limit the proliferation of missiles and missile technology. India joined MTCR in 2016. In practical terms, this would mean that US-based companies would face lower barriers in partnering with Indian companies,' Finer said. India and the US, he said, are not only making significant advancements in their national space programmes but are also increasingly working together to build a cooperative partnership in space, he said. 'Our task as governments is to create a platform for industries to innovate faster together and at scale,' he said. This goal was at the heart of the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (ICET) that the Biden administration launched in January 2023. 'As part of our ICET initiative, we committed to expand commercial space collaboration,' Finer said. Chirag Parikh, Deputy Assistant to the President and Executive Secretary, National Space Council, said the US-India space cooperation has had a long history and is rooted in the civil space environment, particularly on earth science and space science and exploration. 'As we continue to see how India has grown its space sector over just the past several years, they're hitting a number of groundbreaking milestones. Notably, recently, they landed a probe on the Lunar South Pole region called Chandrayan-3, and where we've also been with NASA, been able to partner with them to be able to provide some payload for those elements,' he said. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden met in June 2023 and discussed collaboration around human space flight and joint space exploration, which also included commercial partnerships.'So, our partnership went from civil and scientific exploration to human to now commercial cooperation. And as we learned here today in Houston, the number of opportunities that us, industry and industry, Indian industry have to cooperate in space continues to grow,' he said. "We need to reduce the barriers to be able to enable that type of cooperation further. Early next year, we will have a high-resolution synthetic aperture radar imagery satellite launched out of India, jointly developed through both NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation to be able to map the entire Earth every 12 days, to be able to combat the climate crisis, 'Our cooperation will move into other areas, potentially even in the world of national security space, as we work together to be able to combat some of the types of threats that we see manifesting around the world. So, the opportunity space between India and the United States literally has no bounds, no limits, and can reach the edge of the universe,' Parikh said. A senior administration official told reporters that one of the goals is to include Indian astronauts in America's most ambitious missions. 'What we've heard from Indian interlocutors is their desire to explore potential uses of space in a variety of pursuits, including with respect to some manufacturing in pharmaceuticals and other things that we are now actively exploring, but also just in space exploration,' the official said. 'The Indian astronauts that we shared lunch with today were extraordinarily excited about the opportunities to partner with American and other partners in space, to explore the moon and beyond. Our expectation is that India will be a full partner in everything that we seek to do, increasingly, in every element of space exploration,' the official said. A second senior administration official said, "As part of the Artemis programme is not just the human space exploration of it, but it's actually the contribution of technologies and capabilities. India already has landed a lander on the moon, and the science and data that's gained from that will help enable human spaceflight in the future,' said the official. 'Similarly, with the astronauts that we've met today at Johnson Space Center, India has ambition to develop its own commercial or its own human spaceflight capabilities. So the United States and India are partnering to be able to develop the training for them to have in India so that they can develop an Indian astronaut core as well,' the official said. Imran Khan threatens to stop remittances to Pakistan if demands are unmet

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on Wednesday threatened to call for halting remittances if his demands remain unmet, ARY News reported citing a statement by his sister, Aleema Khan. Imran Khan's sister spoke to the media outside Adiala Jail, stating that the founder reiterated his stance that a judicial commission comprising three Supreme Court judges must be formed, and innocent prisoners should be released. Aleema Khan quoted Imran Khan, saying that if these two demands were not met, he would soon call for "stopping remittances to Pakistan." She claimed that millions of people fell below the poverty line after the PTI government was ousted, and citizens are grappling with economic hardships. Aleema Khan said that overseas Pakistanis are willing to stop sending their remittances to the country, as the elites take their dollars abroad while poor labourers work hard overseas to send dollars back to Pakistan. She further alleged that Imran Khan believes there was a "London Plan" to systematically crush PTI, stripping the party of its election symbol as part of a phased agenda, ARY News reported. Earlier on Friday, Imran Khan reiterated his two demands, calling for a judicial inquiry into the May 9 and November 26 incidents by the country's senior-most judges, and the release of innocent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers arrested after the violent events, The Express Tribune reported. Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail, Imran Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, said that PTI leadership has designated the area around D-Chowk as "Shuhuda Chowk", a tribute to those involved in the political unrest. She said that numerous pieces of evidence, including video footage, have surfaced regarding May 9 and November 26 events. She said that these facts cannot be concealed, stressing that institutions and hospitals are providing evidence. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Trump says India charges a lot of tariff, threatens to impose reciprocal tax

US President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to impose reciprocal tariffs in retaliation for the 'high tariff' imposed by New Delhi on import of certain American products. 'Reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount. They tax us. We tax them. And they tax us. Almost in all cases, they're taxing us, and we haven't been taxing them,' Trump told reporters on Monday. He made the remarks while responding to a question on a potential trade agreement with China. Trump said India and Brazil were among countries that impose high tariffs on certain US products. 'The word reciprocal is important because if somebody charges us ' India, we don't have to talk about our own ' if India charges us 100 per cent, do we charge them nothing for the same? You know, they send in a bicycle and we send them a bicycle. They charge us 100 and 200. India charges a lot. Brazil charges a lot. If they want to charge us, that's fine, but we're going to charge them the same thing,' Trump said at a news conference at Mar-a-Lago. Responding to a question, his Commerce Secretary pick Howard Lutnick said 'reciprocity' is something that is going to be a key topic for the Trump administration. 'How you treat us is how you should expect to be treated,' he said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Ajit Doval holds talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on peace at borders

India, China Special Representatives for the border mechanism, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing on Wednesday to discuss a range of issues, including management of peace and tranquillity along LAC and restoration of bilateral ties frozen for over four years due to the military standoff in eastern Ladakh, reported news agency PTI. Doval, who is heading the Indian delegation, arrived in China on Tuesday to take part in the 23rd round of the Special Representatives' talks being held after a gap of five years. The last meeting was held in 2019 in Delhi. The talks began at 10 am China time. The two officials were expected to discuss a range of issues to rebuild the bilateral ties following the October 21 agreement of disengagement and patrolling in eastern Ladakh between the two countries, reported PTI. On Tuesday, China expressed optimism about the talks saying that it is ready to work with India to implement the commitments based on the common understandings reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during their meeting at Kazan in Russia on the sidelines of the BRICS summit on October 24. China is prepared to settle differences with sincerity, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a media briefing here when asked about the Special Representatives (SR) talks, reported PTI. China is ready to work with India to implement the important common understandings between the leaders of China and India, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, strengthen mutual trust through dialogue and communication, properly settle differences with sincerity and good faith, and bring bilateral relations back to the track of stable and healthy development as soon as possible, he said, reported PTI. The two SRs will discuss the management of peace and tranquillity in the border areas and explore a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question, as agreed upon during the meeting of the two leaders in Kazan, the External Affairs Ministry said on Monday. After the Modi-Xi meeting, which was their first after five years, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Brazil followed by a meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on China-India Border Affairs (WMCC). The military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and was followed by a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June of that year resulting in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours. Barring trade, relations between the two countries virtually came to a standstill. The face-off effectively ended following the completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21. The SRs' meeting is regarded as significant as it is the first structured engagement between the two countries to restore relations. Constituted in 2003 to comprehensively address the vexed dispute of the India-China border spanning 3,488 km, the SRs mechanism over the years met 22 times. While success eluded it in resolving the boundary dispute, officials on both sides regard it as a very promising, useful and handy tool in addressing the recurring tensions between the two countries.
