29 January,2025 12:20 PM ISTIn a tragic incident in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, 13 people lost their lives after several passengers of the Pushpak Express jumped off their coach due to a suspected fire and were struck by another train. The incident took place on 22nd January, around 4:45 pm. According to eyewitnesses, panic was triggered when a tea seller falsely claimed that there was a fire on the train. He reportedly pulled the emergency chain, causing the Pushpak Express to halt. Fearing for their lives, several passengers jumped off the train and were hit by the Karnataka Express, which was passing on an adjacent track at the time. The Pushpak Express, the 12533 Lucknow-Mumbai service, came to a stop after the emergency chain was pulled. Central Railway officials confirmed the incident, which resulted in the tragic deaths of 13 passengers and left several others injured. In the wake of the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, while the Railway Ministry announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the families of the victims. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also extended his condolences and announced a Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for each victim's family. Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole also spoke on the tragic incident. Additionally, the state government will cover all medical expenses for the injured passengers. As per Railway officials, an incident of alarm chain pulling occurred at Pachora following which a few passengers deboarded the train.
