Cyclone Remal: Kolkata Witnesses Heavy Rain, Storms & Gusty Winds

Cyclone Remal has made landfall. Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is witnessing heavy rain and gusty winds after the landfall of severe cyclonic storm 'Remal' commenced on Sunday evening between West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts with an intensity of 110 to 120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph. Visuals from outside the Raj Bhavan showed heavy rains and gusty winds lashing the capital city. Earlier, PM Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the response and preparedness for Cyclone Remal on May 26 in New Delhi. As per IMD Cyclone Remal is set to make landfall in Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts on May 27 midnight.

A sudden dust storm and rain hit Mumbai, Thane, and nearby areas on 13th of May leaving localities in shock. The locals quickly took to social media to share images and videos of the intense storm. The visuals show strong winds, heavy rain, and reduced visibility due to the dust storm. The Regional Meteorological Center has issued yellow alert for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. These regions are very likely to receive thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds (30-40kmph) at isolated places. According to weather department, Mumbai will receive light rain and thunder showers.

Dubai Rain: What caused the heavy rainfall and torrential storm in Dubai?

 A storm hit the United Arab Emirates and Oman this week bringing record rainfall that flooded highways, inundated houses, grid-locked traffic and trapped people in their homes. At least 20 people were reported to have died in the deluge in Oman while another person was said to have died in floods in the UAE that closed government offices and schools for days. The storm had initially hit Oman on April 14 before it pounded the UAE on April 16, knocking out power and causing huge disruptions to flights as runways were turned into rivers. In the UAE, a record 254 millimetres (10 inches) of rainfall was recorded in Al Ain, a city bordering Oman. It was the largest ever in 24 hours since records started in 1949.

Bengal Cyclone: Deadly cyclone in Bengal's Jalpaiguri kills 5, over 170 injured

A deadly cyclone wreaked havoc in parts of WB’s Jalpaiguri as rain and hailstorms hit area causing major damage to life and property. As many as five people have lost their lives over 100 got injured as weather’s wrath on March 31. JGMCH Medical Superintendent said that as many as 49 are admitted and over 170 patients reported in emergency department. Taking to ‘X’, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured supporting affected families and compensation to them. She visited Jalpaiguri to take stock of the situation and also met the victims at the hospital. WB Governor CV Ananda Bose also set up an emergency cell at Raj Bhavan to deal with storm in Jalpaiguri

Panic buying of fuel in Mumbai and other cities across India is being witnessed amid fear of supply shortage. A few petrol pumps in Mumbai are even running dry as a result. This is a consequence of truck and bus drivers protest against the new hit and run law that punishes negligent driving. This new law provides up to 10 years of punishment for fleeing an accident spot without reporting the incident. But the truck drivers say this law is one-sided and harsh on them. The strike going forward is likely to impact the supplies of essential fruits and vegetables and hit the common man.

Israel-Hamas Conflict: IDF storms into Gaza’s biggest hospital Al-Shifa

Israel vowed to destroy Hamas in retaliation for the militants' cross-border assault on Oct 7. For days now, the Israeli army has advanced into Gaza in order to ‘dismantle’ Hamas and its capabilities. In its ‘targeted’ operation against Hamas, IDF confirmed that it raided Gaza’s biggest hospital, Al-Shifa. Troops found weapons and Hamas assets inside Shifa Hospital, which indicated the presence of the terror group reported Times of Israel. Meanwhile, responding to Israeli military's action at Al-Shifa hospital Hamas said it is “not an achievement”.  Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Nov 14 said Israeli forces were in control of the centre of Gaza City. With no sign of a ceasefire on the horizon, more than 11,000 people have been killed in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
