06 April,2025 07:59 AM IST | Lucknow | PTIPakistan’s brittle batting was exposed again as a Ben Sears-inspired New Zealand won the third and final one-day international by 43 runs Saturday to sweep the series 3-0. The tourists were dismissed for 221 off 40 overs in response to New Zealand’s 264-8, in a match shortened to 42 overs after a delayed start at Mount Maunganui. It followed the pattern of the first two games, with the hosts winning the opener in Napier by 73 runs, followed by an 84-run victory in Hamilton. New Zealand also dominated the preceding T20 series, winning 4-1. Pakistan struggled throughout the tour to adjust to the sustained bounce and movement of New Zealand’s seam attack and their batsmen were again guilty of rash shots at Bay Oval. Also Read: LSG skipper Pant fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate, Digvesh penalised once again Aggressive pace bowler Sears claimed 5-34 to follow his five-wicket bag in Hamilton, with four of his victims falling to short-pitched deliveries. Player of the series Sears became the first New Zealander to claim five wickets in successive ODIs and said he simply appreciated a chance to play in the 50-over series, having previously been considered a T20 specialist. “It was a cool couple of days, I’m pretty grateful to get the opportunity against a really good team and it was cool to get some wickets,” said Sears, who adopted the same successful approach in both games. “Same plan, it was just trying to hold it through the middle and just keep that pressure going. It was just cool to be part of that performance,” he added. Fellow seamer Jacob Duffy, who was a handful in both series, took 2-40, including the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan for 37 in the 33rd over. Babar Azam top-scored with 50 off 58 balls while opener Abdullah Shafique ground out a sluggish 33 off 56. Pakistan’s innings began badly when opener Imam-ul-Haq was forced to retire hurt for one, having been struck on the jaw by a fielder’s throw. 06 April,2025 07:58 AM IST | Mount Maunganui (New Zealand) | AFPA struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad would like to reverse their fortunes against a fired-up Gujarat Titans at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday. The home team are walking on a tightrope after three successive defeats. The 80-run humiliation against Kolkata Knight Riders was one of the worst-ever shows. They are now pushed to the bottom half of the table and any further loss would put them in a spot of bother. Therefore, the Pat Cummins-led team would definitely like to reinvent and get back to their winning ways. Assistant coach Simon Helmot agreed that the last couple of matches haven’t been great for them. “But we look forward to still playing a positive brand of cricket and still remaining very confident. We know we have a very good squad. We’re very well led [by Cummins] and we look forward to getting a win against GT in front of our home fans.” Also Read: IPL 2025: Jaiswal's half-century and Archer's three-wicket haul help RR defeat PBKS by 50 runs SRH batters were able to ride high last season because of the robust tactics adopted by their confident batters. But ever since LSG’s Shardul Thakur denoted the top-order in the second match this season, the feared SRH batting of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen have not been the same. They suddenly look listless. The team had raised visions of becoming the first team to score 300-plus after hitting 286-6 against Rajasthan Royals, but instead, the SRH batters have flattered to deceive from the second match on. The Australian coach revealed that there be would no change in the opening pair. “Both Abhi [Abhishek] and Travis have had great success together. So, we look forward to them still having a very aggressive approach at the top,” Helmot said. On any pressure over the hype of scoring in excess of 300, Helmot asserted there is always pressure on teams. “But, certainly not added pressure.” The SRH batters now face another big challenge against in-form Mohammed Siraj. The Hyderabad boy has got his pace and swing back to pose a big threat to the home team’s top-order today. Siraj, who played many matches for the Hyderabad Ranji team at this venue, would like to make his homecoming a memorable one. Prasidh Krishna has also been nippy and accurate. Left-arm spinner Sai Kishore has controlled the middle overs admirably, but that is not the case of wily Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan. He has been GT’s biggest disappointment so far. There are bowling concerns for SRH. They have not been penetrative and have given away far too many runs in the death overs, particularly in the last match as KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh went after Cummins and Harshal Patel. The SRH bowlers will be tested to the full against a solid GT batting line-up, led by Sai Sudharsan. The Tamil Nadu left hander has caught the eye with his wide range of strokes. Jos Buttler showed his class at Bangalore, but a big knock is due from skipper Shubman Gill.
06 April,2025 07:52 AM IST | Hyderabad | N Jagannath DasOpener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 45-ball 67 helped Rajasthan Royals beat Punjab Kings by 50 runs in their IPL match here on Saturday. Chasing 206, Punjab were restricted to 155-9 in 20 overs. Middle-order batter Nehal Wadhera (41-ball 62) and big-hitter Glenn Maxwell (30 off 21 deliveries) gave RR a few hiccups with an 88-run stand off 52 balls for the fifth wicket, but the other batters failed to cash in on the opportunity. Pacer Jofra Archer finished with figures of 3-25 for RR, while Sandeep Sharma and Maheesh Theekshana claimed two wickets each. Earlier, rising India star Jaiswal let his bat do the talking with a timely return to form, slamming a stroke-filled 67 to power RR to 205-4. The 23-year-old, who had endured a lean patch in the opening three games with scores of 1, 29 and 4, roared back to form with a fluent 44-ball fifty (3x4, 5x6) just when the spotlight on him was shifting off the field. Lockie Ferguson dismissed both Samson and Jaiswal against the run of play in the middle overs, and Nitish Rana (12) also got out cheaply as RR lost three wickets in the 11-15 overs phase. Riyan Parag (43 not out off 25 balls) provided the late fireworks with three sixes and as many fours to lift RR past the 200-run mark for the first time at this venue. Parag and Dhruv Jurel (13 not out off five) added 20 runs in the last seven balls as RR plundered 55 runs in the final three overs to finish strongly after their season-best opening stand of 89. 06 April,2025 07:48 AM IST | Mullanpur | PTIWhose decision was it to replace a set batter with a bowling all-rounder in the dying moments of the match? More than that, was it justified? It is an issue that is being hotly discussed in the media and by cricket experts. From the outcome of the game, it was surely an ill-thought-out move. Mumbai Indians head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, at the post-match press conference revealed that it was his decision to ask Tilak Varma to retire for his inability to produce big shots when the asking rate was climbing during their IPL match against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday night. No difference to outcome A full-house at the Ekana Stadium was left stunned as many could not understand what was happening when a set batter left the field without getting out or being injured and a new man walked in to replace him. The move, however, did not make a difference to the outcome as it was already an uphill task when Tilak was recalled with 24 runs needed for a win off just seven deliveries. MI eventually lost by 12 runs. Also Read: IPL 2025 | "We’re trying our level best in all three departments": Ruturaj Gaikwad Mahela Jayawardene. Pic/Sayyed Sameer Abedi Jayawardene said that he decided to retire out Varma when the batter could not get the big hits that were required at that stage. “I think Tilak batted well for us in partnership with Surya, and we were going well until we lost Surya's [Suryakumar Yadav] wicket. After that, he [Tilak] just wanted to get going but couldn’t. I waited till the last few overs, hoping that because he had spent some time there, he should have been able to get that [big] hit out of the way. But I just felt at the end, I just needed someone fresh to go in as he was struggling," he said, clarifying the issue that had perplexed the fans and experts alike. "When these things happen in cricket, it's not nice [to take him out], but I had to do that, [as] it was a tactical decision [in the team's interest] at that point,” he added. The match was in the balance when Tilak walked out in the ninth over at 86 for three. While Surya was shoring up the run-rate, Tilak failed to launch the big hits and was cruising along at a run-a-ball. However, Surya’s dismissal in the 17th over proved to be the turning point of the game, following which Tilak could not raise the tempo and was asked to return to the pavilion. The move, however, did not get the desired result as skipper Hardik Pandya and Mitchell Santner failed to close out the game. Impressive in T20Is for India Rather than the late withdrawal, the better option would have been to instruct Tilak to go hell for leather much earlier. The left-hander has an excellent record for India in T20I, having scored 749 runs at a healthy average of 49.43 and an excellent strike-rate of 155, with two centuries in successive matches (107* in 97 balls and 120* in 69) against South Africa at Centurion and Johannesburg in November last year. But that fluency has deserted him in his few IPL matches this season. He made small contributions of 31 off 25 balls v CSK, 39 off 36 v GT and 25 off 23 v LSG, but all three have come in a losing cause. Interestingly, there were three previous instances where a batsman had been recalled mid-way through his innings in an IPL match, and these too did not get the desired result.
06 April,2025 07:41 AM IST | Lucknow | Santosh SuriChennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad on Saturday expressed his concerns with the side’s struggles in the Powerplay and said they are “over concerned or tentative” about how they fare in the first six overs with both bat and ball. CSK suffered their third defeat in four outings in this edition of the IPL, going down by 25 runs to Delhi Capitals at Chepauk. “Not today, since the last three games, it’s not really going our way. We’re trying our level best in all three departments,” Gaikwad said at the post-match presentation. Pic/AFP “I think Powerplay is definitely a concern for us — in the batting and bowling department. We’ve spotted that since the second game. “We’re trying but it’s just not happening. I just think that we are over concerned or tentative about who’s coming on to bowl in the Powerplay... we’re losing a wicket in the first or second over. We’re just over concerned about things in the Powerplay.” CSK managed just 46 runs for the loss of three wickets in the Powerplay on Saturday, having struggled to get going in their previous outings also. Set a tricky target of 184 on a pitch where batting was not the easiest thing to do, CSK were restricted to 158 for five in 20 overs. Vijay Shankar top-scored for CSK with 69 off 54 balls, while MS Dhoni remained not out on 30 in 26 deliveries. Stylish India batter KL Rahul played the leading role in DC’s comfortable win, making 77 off 51 balls while opening the innings, having batted at No. 4 in the last match. “It’s just how it’s been! I am quite used to it. I was personally prepping to play at the top of the order before the IPL started. I had a chat with the coach, and he said he wanted me to bat at No. 4 because we had a player who didn’t turn up,” Rahul said. 06 April,2025 07:35 AM IST | Chennai | PTIRajasthan Royals secured a commanding 50-run victory over Punjab Kings in their IPL 2025 encounter on Saturday, powered by a sublime half-century from opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and a fiery spell from England pacer Jofra Archer. Opting to bowl first, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer might have rued his decision as Rajasthan Royals piled on a formidable 205/4. Jaiswal led the charge with a fluent 67 off 45 balls, well-supported by skipper Sanju Samson (38 off 26) and a late flourish from the in-form Riyan Parag, who remained unbeaten on 43. Despite a brief middle-overs wobble, the Royals capitalized on the final overs, thanks to Parag and Dhruv Jurel, who ensured a strong finish. In response, Punjab Kings crumbled under early pressure as Jofra Archer (3/25) wreaked havoc with the new ball, reducing them to a precarious 43/4. The innings was briefly revived by a resilient 88-run partnership between Nehal Wadhera (62) and Glenn Maxwell (40), but their dismissals in quick succession extinguished Punjab’s hopes of a comeback. The Royals’ bowlers maintained a stranglehold in the death overs, with Sandeep Sharma (2/21) and Maheesh Theekshana (2/26) complementing Archer’s early breakthroughs. Punjab eventually crawled to 155/9 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target. Brief scores: Rajasthan Royals: 205/4 in 20 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 67, Sanju Samson 38, Riyan Parag 43*; Lockie Ferguson 2/37) Punjab Kings: 155/9 in 20 overs (Nehal Wadhera 62, Glenn Maxwell 40; Jofra Archer 3/25, Sandeep Sharma 2/21, Maheesh Theekshana 2/26)
05 April,2025 11:26 PM IST | Mullanpur | mid-day online correspondentChennai Super Kings (CSK) put to rest swirling rumours about MS Dhoni's retirement in classic fashion, with a witty social media post. As speculation gained momentum ahead of Saturday’s IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, rumoured to be Dhoni’s final outing, CSK turned to their trademark meme game to silence the chatter. The buzz intensified when visuals of Dhoni’s parents, Pan Singh and Devika Devi, wife Sakshi, and daughter Ziva, surfaced from the stands. It marked the first time the veteran cricketer’s family attended an IPL match in person together. Home sweet Anbuden ft. While cryptic at first glance, fans familiar with CSK’s meme culture recognised the subtle dismissal of the retirement narrative. The referenced scene features a character urging a crowd to disperse and stop discussing a drawn-out issue, a pointed nod to the media frenzy around the former India captain. No context. 🧢💛 pic.twitter.com/ypZXeQffG5 — Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) April 5, 2025 The retirement rumours initially sparked when CSK batting coach Michael Hussey hinted that Dhoni might return as captain for the game, with regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad reportedly nursing a wrist injury from the clash against Rajasthan Royals. However, Gaikwad recovered in time and led the team as usual. Unfortunately for CSK, their performance on the field didn’t match the off-field theatrics. They allowed Delhi Capitals to pile up 183 runs on a tricky, two-paced surface and faltered in the chase, ultimately losing by 25 runs. Despite the defeat, the Dhoni retirement narrative was effectively shut down, at least for now, by the franchise’s clever, no-fuss response. MS Dhoni in IPL 2025 A closer look at the numbers paints a telling picture: in CSK's 18 victories since IPL 2023, Dhoni has managed just 3 runs. Conversely, in the 14 matches they’ve lost, he has amassed 166 runs at an average of 83, including an unbeaten 37 against Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam, indicating he often steps up when the team is struggling. Across his last 68 appearances, the 43-year-old has scored 1,033 runs at an impressive average of 49.19 and a strike rate of 133.29, featuring four half-centuries and a highest score of 70 not out.
05 April,2025 08:40 PM IST | Chennai | mid-day online correspondentDelhi Capitals ended a 15-year drought at Chepauk with a clinical 25-run victory over Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing IPL 2025 on Saturday. Despite brief resistance from the middle order, CSK’s chase of 184 faltered under pressure, with Vijay Shankar’s painstaking fifty becoming a key talking point. Needing 184 to win, CSK were quickly pegged back after losing Rachin Ravindra, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Devon Conway inside the Powerplay. Shankar attempted to anchor the innings, but his 54-ball 69 was short on intent and boundaries. Shankar reached his fifty in 43 balls, the slowest of IPL 2025 so far, as the asking rate ballooned beyond 27 an over during his stand with MS Dhoni. Though he held one end, the lack of urgency left CSK’s lower order with too much to do. Earlier, DC posted a competitive 183/6, powered by KL Rahul’s elegant 77 off 51 balls. Abhishek Porel smashed 33 off 20, while cameos from Axar Patel (21 off 14) and Tristan Stubbs (24* off 12) gave Delhi late momentum. Chennai’s bowlers, despite flashes of discipline, leaked runs at the death. After the early collapse, CSK’s hopes hinged on a middle-order rebuild. But Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja failed to capitalize, and with Dhoni unable to find the fence consistently, Delhi maintained control. The home side eventually limped to 158/5, falling short by 25 runs. Shankar's stint with IPL Shankar made his IPL debut with the Chennai Super Kings in 2014, featuring in just one match that season. Since then, he has represented multiple franchises in the league. In 2017, he was picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he played four games and registered his maiden half-century. The following year, he joined Delhi Capitals for a single season before returning to Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he remained for two more seasons leading up to the mega auction. His most notable team success came in 2022 when he was part of the Gujarat Titans’ title-winning campaign, albeit in a limited role. In the 2023 season, the introduction of the Impact Player rule provided greater opportunities, allowing Shankar to make a more significant contribution to the side.
05 April,2025 08:01 PM IST | Chennai | mid-day online correspondentRookie leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi has emerged as one of the most promising bowlers of the IPL season, and former Australian white-ball star Shane Watson believes it’s his control over length and clever use of subtle variations, including the off-break and carrom ball, that make him a genuine threat. The 25-year-old Delhi spinner, representing Lucknow Super Giants, has quickly made a name for himself as a breakout performer this season. In just four matches, Rathi has claimed six wickets while maintaining an impressive economy rate of 7.62. His consistent ability to finish his full quota of overs underlines the trust placed in him by captain Rishabh Pant, who has backed the youngster to deliver in crucial phases. "It seemed like he was born to perform on this IPL stage. He wasn't reserved, he was out there, beating his chest, showing confidence, and executing beautifully," Watson told on JioHotstar after LSG defeated Mumbai Indians by 12 runs with Rati getting the 'Player of The Match' award for his 1 for 21 in four overs which included eight dot balls. In fact, Rathi brought LSG back into the game when Naman Dhir (46 off 24 balls) was looking ominous. He breached Dhir's defence with a carrom ball that turned like an off-break. "What stands out about Digvesh is how simple he keeps his game. He runs in, uses his variations"the carrom ball and off-spinner"but his control over length is what makes him so dangerous. When a bowler gets the length right, it's tough for batters to step out or go on the back foot," Watson explained. "To think that in a high-scoring game, where nearly 200 runs were posted, he conceded just 21 runs in his four overs"that's something very, very special." Rathi mentioned that his passion for spin bowling grew watching Sunil Narine bowl and Watson also found shades of Narine in the Delhi lad who sports a flowing mane. "It's the kind of impact we usually see from Sunil Narine. That's why he was the Man of the Match"performances like this don't happen often. But that's the beauty of the IPL. Every season, new talents like Digvesh burst onto the scene and showcase their incredible skills." Watson was all praise for Shardul Thakur, whose crucial 19th over, in which he conceded only seven runs, made it easier for Avesh Khan to defend 22 runs in the final over. "Shardul executed brilliantly. He knew he had to commit to his yorker. Typically, bowlers rely on changes of pace early on, but that just wasn't working tonight. So, he focused on nailing his yorkers, especially against an in-form Hardik Pandya." The performance would be a morale booster for Shardul, who wasn't originally picked by any franchise, said Watson. "Bowling a seven-run over at such a crucial stage, with Hardik at the crease, was special. That's a big confidence booster for him. Given that Shardul went unsold in the auction and then got picked up as a free agent, you can see how determined he is to prove himself. He's now delivered two strong performances, and this one played a major role in LSG getting over the line." (With PTI inputs)
05 April,2025 06:43 PM IST | Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) | mid-day online correspondentDespite claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 cricket, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya found himself on the wrong side of the result on Friday, as MI fell short by 12 runs against hosts Lucknow Super Giants. Reflecting on the loss, Pandya emphasised the need for sharper decision-making, saying the team must "take better calls, be smarter in bowling, and take chances in batting" moving forward. Chasing a formidable 204 on a batting-friendly surface, Mumbai's innings lacked sustained momentum. One of the key turning points in the match was the spell from LSG leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi, who delivered a game-changing performance. Rathi conceded just 21 runs in his four overs and claimed the crucial wicket of a well-set Naman Dhir, who was anchoring the innings with a brisk 46. This marked MI’s third defeat in four outings, raising concerns over their execution under pressure despite individual brilliance, like Pandya’s standout spell. "As a batting unit, we fell short. We win as a team, we lose as a team. I take full ownership," said a disappointed Pandya, who returned with figures of 5/36 and also scored an unbeaten 16-ball 28. The restrictive bowling by LSG frustrated MI, with Tilak Varma guilty of consuming 23 balls for his 25 before he retired hurt. "We needed some hits, he (Tilak) was not getting those. In cricket some of those days come, when you try but they (runs) don't come. Just play good cricket, I like to keep it simple. Take better calls, be smart in bowling, take chances in batting. "Disappointing when you lose. If we had to be honest, in the field, 10-12 runs we gave too much. We fell short in the end." Rathi said he always bowls to take wickets and wants to be mentally strong like West Indies spinner Sunil Narine, who plays for KKR. "I am really enjoying it. My bowling is such that I like to take wickets. I saw Sunil Narine bowl and since then I like bowling. I want to make my mindset more attacking like Sunil Narine. Like he takes pressure for the team." On the delivery which dismissed the well-set Naman Dhir, Rathi said, "The over before that, I asked Rishabh (Pant) whether we should have mid-wicket or not. We did not have the mid-wicket, so he looked to play there and was bowled," added Rathi. (With PTI inputs)
