Former BCCI statistician and scorer Dinar Gupte, 76, passed away due to Covid-19 in Baroda on Thursday.

Gupte, who helped several associations in grooming scorers and statisticians, was also a member of the All India Radio statisticians panel. Along with veteran cricket statistician Sudhir Vaidya, Gupte was involved in providing accurate figures and details to the BCCI for the first five editions of the IPL. He also worked on several BCCI annuals.

“We worked together for around 40 years. It is a huge loss for the BCCI as well as the Baroda Cricket Association. As a statistician, he served both these bodies in a big way. He was very devoted to cricket; his handwriting very neat and clean. It will be a fine tribute to him if the BCCI resumes publishing their statistical annuals again, which they stopped from 2009,” Vaidya told mid-day from Pune on Thursday.

“My first interaction with Dinar sir was during my Mumbai Cricket Association’s scorer course and exam days in 1997. His meticulousness and the manner in which he carried himself was always a learning point for us,” said Mumbai-based BCCI panel scorer, Vivek Gupte.
