Start young

Teenager Krishnaveer Kaigonkar has written an interesting book on investing for his peers. In Piggy Bank Investing, Kaigonkar who is all of 16 years old, has systematically broken-down different aspects of investment. We particularly loved the table that explains the fiscal risk for a 15-year-old vs a 25-year-old, detailing pros such as the younger lot having the capacity to lose money while the latter might not be able to take big losses. The last chapter, How to Build a Balanced Portfolio, talks about what a bad and a model portfolio looks like. We loved the book because it has tips that even grownups can learn from.

Don’t throw shade; wear it

Monsoon clouds are gone, and it’s time to whip out our sunscreens and shades. If you’re bored with your regular ol’ black sunglasses and want something more chic, put on Tinted Story’s butterfly shades. These sleek, rimless sunglasses are shaped like the elegant wingspan of the insect. They start at R1,600 and come in shades of blush pink, green, brown, and the classic black. We also love their funky line of cat-eye.

A goth’s treasure chest

The dark arts and goth community has been prejudiced against for the longest time globally. That hasn’t stopped the goth aesthetic reigning as dominant form of expression. Although the clothes to match this darker aesthetic are comparatively easier to find, accessories can be limited. Xx.Anthea by Nishtha is a Kolkata based small business that hand crafts resin art jewellery ranging from rings to pendants, that are not gender-bound. Many of her pieces have cult literary and art references, such as to The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe.

A trip down gaming lane

Remember the days of yesteryear when smartphones didn’t exist and computers were still in their early chunky stages? Back then, as 2000’s kids, we used to amuse ourselves playing games on those computers, albeit with a very traditional approach—buy the CD, install the software, and choose from among the pixelated car racing or model dress-up games to play. Sonsaur Games is a modern-day website that replicates these old school vibes. It has OGs like Temple Run, Kart Racing Pro, and Solitaire, along with newer favourites such as Among Us and a Candy Crush-like “imposter”. We played Sweet World, and were instantly transported into the 2000s-core atmosphere. We also tried the Bubble Shooter Wheel, and got quite engrossed, only emerging when we realised we had work to do. The best part is that you can play all the games on your PC or laptop, without needing to sign in. Be careful—you may end up as addicted as we did.

Gore for lunch

There are two types of horror movie enthusiasts: Those who watch them for the plot; and those who enjoy the gory, slasher elements. Deformed Lunchbox is a Youtube channel dedicated to short horror films that cater to a third niche audience that prefers subliminal hints and messages through gory slasher themes and visuals. Known for their short film, Make me a sandwich, which depicts a spouse demanding endless sandwiches from his wife till she reaches a breaking point and feeds him things that couldn’t possibly be imagined. Although this film comes off as repulsive or unconventional, there are underlying tones of abuse and patriarchy portrayed within the few short minutes. The channel also has various other horror films inspired by recent themes of AI and online dating.  The short films last for 15 minutes.
