Researchers at Cornell University, in collaboration with NVIDIA, have developed a groundbreaking method for rendering realistic iridescent feathers in digital media. Using specimens from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the team modelled how light interacts with the nanostructures in bird feathers to create iridescence. This method accurately simulates the colour changes and glittery appearance seen in species like hummingbirds and peacocks.

Yunchen Yu, a doctoral student, presented the study at SIGGRAPH Asia 2024, winning the Best Paper Award. Yu’s work included detailed modelling of the microscopic barbules in feathers, incorporating natural imperfections for enhanced realism. The team used NVIDIA’s advanced graphics rendering software to produce visually stunning images efficiently.

This breakthrough could revolutionise animation and video game design, making it easier for artists to integrate lifelike iridescent effects into their creations.

Researchers are now focused on making the tool more user-friendly for designers and expanding its application to other species.
