Mumbai: BMC chief cancels weekly offs to meet May 31 deadline

Taking his commitment towards meeting the May 31 deadline for completion of de-silting work to the next level, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta cancelled weekly offs of all the ward officers and deputy municipal commissioners until further notice.

As per the statement issued by the BMC yesterday, all assistant municipal commissioners (ward officers) and deputy municipal commissioners (DMCs) will have to conduct rigorous supervision of the de-silting work in their respective wards to ensure its completion before the deadline. The decision was taken at a review meeting that took place between the civic chief and senior staffers.

In addition, Mehta would be conducting surprise checks to gauge the progress of the de-silting work. He also directed the staffers to complete the work on minor nullahs by Wednesday. All zonal DMCs will be responsible for the completion of work in their wards.

Officer says
“Looks like none of us will be getting leaves until June 30, as the first month of monsoon is always crucial. Most ward officers have school-going children. While the schools reopen in June, none of them will be able to help their families. Storm Water Drain (SWD) Department is responsible for cleaning the major nullahs. Despite this, we have been entrusted with the responsibility of doing their job. There is nothing much for us to do,” said an assistant municipal commissioner.
