Monsoon break decreases leptospirosis and gastroenteritis cases in Mumbai

As the dry spell continues in Mumbai, the city saw less number of monsoon aliment cases in August as compared to June and July. According to the BMC's monsoon report, the number of cases related to leptospirosis and gastroenteritis reduced this month.


Around 265 leptospirosis cases and 819 gastroenteritis cases were reported in Mumbai, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data.


In June and July, Mumbai reported 97 and 413 cases of leptospirosis respectively. Similarly, in June and July, Mumbai reported 1,744 and 1,767 cases of gastroenteritis respectively.


The civic body stated a reduction in leptospirosis and gastroenteritis, hepatitis, and H1N1 cases was observed between August 21-27, when compared to the last week of August 14-20, 2023.

"A slight rise is observed in malaria, dengue and chikungunya cases between August 21-27th when compared to the last week of August between 14-20, 2023," the BMC release stated.

"In 2023, cases increased due to an increase in reporting units from 22 to 880. These units include BMC dispensaries, BMC Hospitals, HBT clinics, additional private labs, and private hospitals," added the BMC release.
