Thane civic body disconnected 2,606 tap connections in the municipal area and seized 411 motor pumps in December over pending water bill dues. The Water Supply Department also sealed 73 pump rooms and issued notices to 2,330 defaulters to recover pending water bills, the Thane Municipal Corporation stated in a release on Wednesday.

Police penalised more than 23,000 motorists for violating rules, driving drunk, and obstructing traffic, during the New Year celebrations in Mumbai, officials said on Wednesday. While traffic police penalised 17,800 vehicles and collected Rs 89,19,750 fine via e-challans, city police fined 5,670 motorists.

A 40-year-old jewellery craftsman has been arrested from Rajasthan for allegedly stealing diamonds worth Rs 1.47 crore from a company in Mumbai where he worked, police said here on Wednesday. Sachin J Makwana was tracked down after the investigators checked the footage of more than 120 CCTV cameras, said an official of Goregaon police station in the city.
