The BJP won 48 seats in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party from power. Gupta, a first-time MLA, will become the fourth woman to hold the office of Chief Minister in Delhi. She will also be the only woman CM of a BJP-ruled state or Union Territory at present. Born in Nandgarh village, Haryana, Gupta moved to Delhi with her family at the age of two. Her father worked for the State Bank of India. Gupta began her political journey in 1993 when she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the students’ organization affiliated with the RSS. She later became the general secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1995 to 1996, and its president from 1996 to 1997. In 2002, Gupta joined the BJP and quickly rose through the ranks. She became the secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Delhi and was later promoted to the national secretary of BJYM, holding the position until 2005. Gupta also served as the general secretary of the Delhi BJP Mahila Morcha, the national vice-chairperson of the BJP Mahila Morcha, and the national in-charge of the Uttar Pradesh Mahila Morcha. She has been a member of the BJP National Executive. Gupta holds a degree in commerce and a Master’s degree in management and arts from the University of Delhi. After her oath-taking ceremony on Thursday, she will begin her tenure as the Chief Minister of Delhi.
